I'm starting to really like this David Leyonhjelm.

Every time I hear he speak he makes a lot of sense in nearly every point that is raised with him. He seems to be firmly in the libertarian camp but he is very refreshing and intelligent bloke who will be a welcome presence in the parliament. Just a pity he is a single senator and there aren't more of his kind in there at the moment.

Here he is getting a good run from Alan Jones and although the lefties will burst into flames and the skin will melt off their faces if they listen to AJ, I urge them to do it to hear an intelligent point of view (and hopefully they will burst into flames and their faces will melt off as well. Just an added bonus)

Well, for one I don't understand why we take the 60th percentile of what is considered safe driving speed and use that as our speed limit, where as in other parts of the world it is the 80th percentile. Not to mention the countless studies that show reducing the speed limit does not necessarily reduce the risk of crash.

As for the rest of their policies, I'm yet to see how libertarian ideals can be made into something workable. Sure, we are all individuals. And yes, we all should rely on only ourselves as strong individuals in order to succeed in whatever it is we want to succeed in. No quarrels there. But the problem, as has been shown in developing countries around the world, is that in order to allow individuals to be strong one must have a strong base: ie a strong society. And when government says it shouldn't be involved in society aside from its defense...well... sorry, but how can one make a strong society when the modern world has resulted in much stronger forces then simply running power and muscle power in order to go out and gather food?

The LDP isn't suggesting unlimited speed. What it does suggest is that, based on studies done which you are welcome to google, speeds should be set not just on the idea that "reduced speeds reduce crashes" but also that road networks must look at coordinating the time a vehicle spends in the network; hence why they propose a variable speed limit within the 80th percentile of the safe driving speed.

As for collectivism, I think you will find that modern democracies, such as Australia, have created a hybrid model between socialism and libertarianism, rather than looking at only a collectivist approach or an individualist approach. And why? Perhaps it's like I say: more strong individuals come from strong societies. So, the libertarian approach of the LDP, with its unproven ideas that lower tax = more revenue or that we should look towards privatisation of key government services have either not been taken up, in modern society, or are now being turned back as is the case in the US. And really, the LDP should be looked at in the same fashion as we look at the Socialist Party of Australia; extreme fringe.

Not really. The studies do exist and they do show that variable speed limits are preferable to set speed limits in that they enable better movement of traffic. And the better the movement, the less risk of crash.
