Prime Minister Tony Abbott said authorities were confident they knew the location of the black box.

'It's been very much narrowed down because we've now had a series of detections, some for quite a long period of time,' he told reporters in Shanghai.

But moments later, the Joint Agency Coordination Centre (JACC) said there had been no breakthrough, and that an initial assessment of the sounds detected on Thursday afternoon by an RAAF AP-3C Orion aircraft had concluded they were 'unlikely to be related to the aircraft black boxes'.

They have so far been the unsung heroes in the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.

But now the dozens of State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers who have spent almost 1700 hours in the air scouring the Indian Ocean for any sign of the missing Boeing 777 are being recognised.

More than 75 SES volunteers have completed 176 shifts over two weeks, flying from Perth in civil aircraft to the ever-narrowing search zone, about 2280 kilometres northwest of the West Australian capital.

They have come from units across the metropolitan area, as well as the Goldfields-Midlands and Pilbara regions, providing invaluable support to the multi-nation defence force effort.

One of the air observers, Lyn Bryant, said the SES was experienced in helping the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and WA Police searching for missing aircraft, vessels or people on land or at sea, but this operation was beyond the usual scale and difficulty.

'The search area is vast, weather conditions are at times difficult and spotting items in the swell can be extremely challenging,' he said.

'The focus required to search the seas for hours on end can be draining, but we are willing and able to contribute to the international response to this tragedy.

'All the volunteers have searched with all their focus on finding any piece of the puzzle that might assist. We have families too and feel for those that had loved ones on the missing flight.'

The volunteers were praised by Lloyd Bailey, the deputy commissioner of the Department of Fire and Emergency Services operations command unit, which is co-ordinating the SES involvement.

'They have spent time away from family, friends and their workplace to put in hours. ' We are proud to have such committed emergency services volunteers serving our state,' Mr Bailey said.
