Howard has been reassessed. A new survey undertaken by Essential Research, and provided exclusively to this column, reveals 39 per cent of voters now regard Howard as the best prime minister of the past 40 years.

Howard is followed by Labor’s Bob Hawke (14 per cent), with Gough Whitlam and Rudd tying for third place, each as the choice of 8 per cent of voters. In fifth place is Paul Keating (7 per cent). Gillard (4 per cent) and Malcolm Fraser (3 per cent) are well down the list. Tony Abbott, in the top job for just six months, has 3 per cent of the vote.

Even Labor voters chose Howard as the best

In this poll, tribal Labor voters had more prime ministers to choose from: five compared with the Coalition’s three. Overall, 45 per cent of voters selected a Liberal prime minister and 41 per cent chose a Labor prime minister.
