The Department of Defence has confirmed an investigation has been launched into potential allegations of rape carried out on young male sailors, including anal penetration using writing implements and drink containers.

The navy frigate, HMAS Ballarat, an Anzac-class guided missile frigate that is currently in use to intercept and rescue asylum-seeker vessels to Australia's north, is at the centre of a military investigation into bizarre hazing rituals carried out by about a dozen sailors, all men.

The bastardisation ritual included acts in which sailors were smacked and anally penetrated with pens and other objects on their birthdays.

Defence says because the Ballarat is currently deployed on border protection operations, officials from the Australian Defence Force Investigative Service will not be able to join the ship immediately and it might take up to several days before the investigation is properly begun.

A former navy member who identified herself as Bridget told Channel Ten on Thursday that sailors on board the ship have told her that young men are being attacked with objects including water bottles and marker pens.

"People were set upon by members and stripped off and had things essentially put in their bums," she said.

"I think people are scared. If it happened in a normal workplace the police would be called, charges would be laid."

Intercept and rescue, that's a newbie, the two are separate and very different actions.

Interecept> 1. obstruct (someone or something) so as to prevent them from continuing to a destination.

Rescue> 1. save (someone) from a dangerous or distressing situation.

We shouldn't believe black refugees when they made the allegations about having their hands deliberately burnt on a boat engine by navy personnel because they weren't Australian??? Therefore the media source which brought us the news has to be un-Australian and we're not going to investigate this outrageous claim and the ABC should be closed down???

Witch-hunt against Australian ABC escalates over refugee torture allegations

As evidence continues to emerge indicating that the Australian navy may have assaulted refugees, deliberately causing burns, during operations to force them back to Indonesia, the government is intensifying its witch-hunt of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) for reporting the accusations.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Wednesday demanded that the ABC apologise for broadcasting video footage of the refugees’ badly burned hands and for suggesting that the injuries supported the allegations initially made by asylum seekers to Indonesian police last month. Abbott accused the ABC for its reporting “in ways that were extremely damaging to the professionalism of our military personnel.”

Defence Minister David Johnston went further yesterday, saying he was “absolutely sick to the stomach that this iconic Australian news agency would attack the navy in the way that it has.” Describing naval personnel as “heroes,” he called for an inquiry into the ABC. At the same time he reiterated the government’s refusal to investigate the mounting evidence. In an extraordinary outburst pointing to the xenophobic nature of the government’s campaign, Johnston told the Australian newspaper that the refugees making the complaints were not “even Australian” and were “desperate people.”
