Where in the world is Sappho Going to Go

OK... so we all know that my Mum died and her death comes with an inheritance so I've decided to spend a portion of that inheritance on 6mths travel. I'm going to get one of those round the world tickets that will allow 6 stops. This is not to gloat, because really the ticket will cost only 3 thousand, and I'm planning to use back packers for accommodation because there is no point wasting money on 5 star indulgences to the detriment of the amazing locations I could visit.

There are some things which are definitely must do's such as seeing the Northern Lights, Polar Bears, Safari, New Orleans Mardi Gras... but I've not planned it out as yet. I want to leave in 2014.

So my question to you guys is this... Where is the world would you want to go and what would you want to see? I'm hoping that there are some ideas from you all that I can add to my wish list.

If you are in California, check out Yosemite and Yellowstone.

New Orleans is definitely worth a visit.

South and central America would be cool also (I've only visited Mexico).

South Africa - Kruger National Park, or any of the others. Go when there is less undergrowth so you can see the animals easier (dry season I think).

Save your money and take your time.

Was just in NOLA (New Orleans) last weekend. Had a great time in the French Quarter and took a ride down St Charles in the streetcar. Was surprised that the place was full of Brits looking for sex. Like music? The Mapleleaf is only a cab ride away. Not much good music left on Bourbon Street.

Nice one Freediver... Definitely Yellowstone is on my must see list... I have a fascination for that supersized volcano which is apparently lifting rather quickly. As for Yosemite... I was thinking of linking in with one of those archaeological tourist digs.

Definitely recommend South America to you Freediver and in particular the Brazil for the Amazon (Just don't drive the truck routes to get there... the pot holes destroy wheels, although the hokey tire centres are quite skilled at banging a wheel back into shape I learned.) and Argentina for the Iguazu Falls which are more spectacular on the Argentinian side than they are on the Brazilian. And in Brazil, you can't miss out on Carnival which for a bit extra you can participate in with costume... très cool. San Paulo is the home of graffiti art... And Brazilian 'all you can eat' restaurants which can be meats, seafood... or even pizza are quite an experience. Heck, just a normal meal in Brazil is a meal for two... so best only to order one to share.

Sad about the brits... and yeah love music... I play music.. flute and west African drum so am interested in the roots of rock and roll including blues and particularly boogie which predates swing/jazz. Not everyone's cup of tea but meh... I like it. I've inherited my dad's boogie/swing/blues record collection and have been listening to it lately... man they made records thick back then.

Yellowstone - rent a van in the summer and sleep in it. You have to drive outside the park boundary, which is not far. It is high so not too hot in summer. You can also stay inside the park. You can drive round most of it and do hikes of varying lengths. Most of the interesting bits have carparks within ten minutes walk (you know what Americans are like). There are plenty of hiking trails to whatever length you want. Yosemite is actually better for day hikes - half dome is probably the best, but a bit crowded.

I've always had a soft spot for Ragtime, which I am sure you know, predates Jazz as well.

Word of advice if you want to visit New Orleans. You're going to go see the French Quarter. You're a tourist, it's expected and quite honestly there's fuck all else to see/do unless the Saint's made the SUperbowl and they're hosting in NOLA. Now, as long as you stay in the defined limits of the French Quarter you're just another tourist, people will be polite, friendly even because they want you to spend money. If you go outside of the quarter and you end up in some ghettos that are dangerous enough even my black ass won't go there.

Basically, cross Canal Street at your own peril, you will get jacked, and you could wind up as another dead tourist.
