Re: Rain, real goddamn rain predicted for Adelaide. . .
Hmmmm this morning threw the ball for the dog to chase a few times, then it was time for work--Demi's work
Got out the dumbell "Fetch!" as I held it just before her face. If she grabbed it and held it a few seconds she got rewarded by me throwing the tennis ball to the end of the garden for her to chase & retrieve. Got to the stage she (nearly) picked it up off the ground (I had to give a little bit of help) which was a good note to finish on and I gave her a few treats. So, this shouldn't take too long.
At work this morning posty came in & dropped a A4 sized envelope marked 'dogssa' and, yup, had her CCD title certificate in it!

Likewise.
And furthermore:
And furthermore:
for tomorrow- and I have to work 9.30 to 2.30.13° Showers and mountain snow. Windy.
The better I get to know people, the more I find myself loving dogs.

It is raining again, quite hard and (sob!) I had to unload a lot of stock off my car in the rain (not fair, sob)
Re: Rain, real goddamn rain predicted for Adelaide. . .
Weeeee!!!!! Rained again yesterday morning!
Was doing the trialling class, we went over to the practice ring to do a group stay under trial conditions (and, of all the collies/German Shepherds there it was Demi and one other terrier who did the sit and drop stays properly! Yes!)
Stayed there while the rest of the class went back to their spot to put Demi through the ring at Novice level. Started drizzling slightly and the female instructor felt it was too wet and was going inside where it was dry. The Chief Instructor was there, suitably attired for wet weather, and offered to put me and Demi through. Bit of a breakthrough, this guy seemed to have a bit of a snit on because Demi had got her CCD title.
Seems I slow down if i think Demi is lagging, need to heel with more pizzaz, much more briskly. However, apart from Demi running to him instead of me (Demi really likes the CI* ) in the first recall Demi did brilliantly.
Have just posted off an entry form for the Trial at Whyalla on the 7th Jun!!! Lot of travel, I will ensure shop is ready for me to close on the dot of 4.00pm (might even close at 3.00, hmmm) and head out directly Pt Wakefield, Pt Pirie, Pt Augusta where I might stay the night at a motel (Demi in the car or in her crate in the room) with a request for a 6.00am wakeup call which should get me to the trial venue in Whyalla before 8.45 to have Demi 'vetted.'
You can imagine that at a trial with hundreds of dogs a bitch in oestrus could cause havoc All I need to do for the vetting is show the desexing tattoo in Demi's ear.
Be great if she passed that Trial!

* One of the reasons Demi and me spent so many wearisome months in Grade 3 was that, as I said, she really liked the CI. So, one of the exercises for graduation was the stand for exam but Demi kept walking to the CI and breaking the stand.

Re: Rain, real goddamn rain predicted for Adelaide. . .
Yesterday I sent in an entry form for the Whyalla trial (to be held 6-7th Jun, tho I will only attend the Sun 7th trial.)
This morning I had a nightmare about it! WTF! Couldn't find the place to register, found it, was told I had to have Demi vetted (i.e. that she wasn't on heat) couldn't find that, found it but no one was there!!
Maybe that is a good omen? Had a nightmare about the Noarlunga trial too (a stout middleaged dame in a white pleated frock came and told me Demi didn't do the automatic sit (i.e sit when I stopped walking in the heel which Demi had done well since Grade 2) well enough and couldn't finish the trial and needed additional coaching! Weird dreams, eh?
Will rent another Hyndai Getz--is a fair trip and don't want to breakdown in the middle of nowhere at night!!!
Novice class is a bit scary: take dog to the start peg, remove lead & give to steward and don't see the lead again until ready to leave the ring! But I have done this now in the practise ring and in lessons so I don't worry about this aspect. Much.

Re: Rain, real goddamn rain predicted for Adelaide. . .
Hmmmm before joining the Grade 4/5/CCD/Novice class yesterday evening I went through a practice ring. I remembered that on Sunday the CI said I should heel with more pizzaz. So on the command to heel walked off with very brisk but not large steps. Worked too! Apart from lagging a bit on the start Demi kept up and was pretty close to me.
So, change of position from a distance, the signal I have been using (hands clasped in front, moving them sideways away from my body, a signal I have seen people do in rings) too confusing, too similar to the recall signal (hands flung out and up) so we devised a signal where I raised my hands, moved them out a bit and made a pushing motion. Practiced that at the lesson & later at home. Works fine. Did the figure of eight, remembering to accelerate through the straight bits of the '8' and again Demi followed at my heels. We received high praise from the lady that puts people through the ring Wednesday nights--old as the hills but with keen eyesight that picks up my blunders Hope the Trial at Whyalla goes as well.
Starting to pick up some elements of ringcraft. One problem I have is I cannot walk straight, tend to walk into my dog. So in the trial must not look sideways at Demi and instead concentrate on walking parallel to the sides of the ring, remembering brisk but short steps. Also have to concentrate on my hands: there are 'double commands' you get pinged for and not watching where my hands are can result in the judge considering a careless placement of hands such a double command. This Sunday I will be a steward at the Novice ring at the trial my club is putting on, hoping to pick up more ringcraft.
I no longer have a lead in class or in the trial ring so what to do with my left hand, if I have it just swinging as you do naturally when walking then that is bulk distracting for the dog. So, when not using it for a signal my left arm & hand are folded across my belly. I did stuff up on this point last night but better not stuff up at the trial!
Pretty much for all of each class Demi is off lead and doesn't run away etc, such a change on this time last year! This time last year I was still in Grade 3 and resenting that bitterly, then we got promoted to Gr 4 in June and to Gr 5 late July. From then until early this year she was a cow! Running past me and away in the recall and generally being a pig, late last year finally started settling down and improving. So some change, Grade 3 to getting the CCD title!
Now on Sunday 7th Jun, probably not long after 10.00am after the CCD riffraff have gone through the ring it will be my and Demi's turn. Lead off, "forward" and we heel off, my trying to remember to walk briskly, keeping that pesky left arm tucked up out the way and walking straight, parallel to the sides of the ring and waiting for the judge's next command and hoping not to stuff up too badly!
All this shit is completely new, as is the instructing bit, and is I hope keeping the nougat behind my eyes working and not decaying into senility

Re: Rain, real goddamn rain predicted for Adelaide. . .
Rain?? Faaark! Rained nearly the whole fucking morning! Judges having trouble keeping scoresheets dry. Ah well, stewarded at the Novice ring--the level Demi will be in in Whyalla on Sunday week.
Learned one thing, had it drummed in to me along with the rain: if you don't walk briskly with quick, short-medium paces you are fucked beyond all redemption: saw handlers meandering through the figure of eight, dog a metre or two behind then handler is told to 'halt' dog halts, often standing rather than doing the automatic sit and on the handler being told 'forward' the dog takes a shortcut and goes directly to its handler without going around the figure. Fail!
It was the club's 40th anniversary and judges and stewards etc had a slap up lunch incl a slice of the 40th 'birthday' cake.
Outside for presentation of certificates, sashes and trophies. As a reward for being a steward I scored a bottle of port, nice!
Trying to dry out and warm up right now

Nothing in particular, but boy it is still pissing down! Haven't had a winter like it for years! Resevoirs must be filling which is good. Rural producers in SA must be loving the rain and as rural exports are a bright point in this recession year that augers well for next year.
