Abbott keeps GST promise.

Federal Government brushes aside calls from Colin Barnett, ACT for increase to GST
By Anna Henderson

The Federal Government has again moved to quash calls from some states for an increase to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), restating that there will be no changes.

West Australian Premier Colin Barnett last night ignited fresh debate about an increase.

Mr Barnett, a long-time advocate of a GST overhaul and whose state lost its AAA credit rating on Wednesday, told Lateline the states want access to more revenue. yes well watching Tony Jones try to nail the federal government while trying to lead and badger the WA Premier was interesting if not obvious.

"Whether the rate goes up or some of the exemptions are got rid of, that needs to happen," he said

"Western Australia is the strongest economy. It is a very prosperous and wealthy state and all Western Australians accept we are prepared to cross-subsidise the Northern Territory, Tasmania, and South Australia, but there is a limit to that." Just as NSW had to prop up many states when it was doing well Mr Barnett.... how soon we forget.

Key points

* Federal Government says there will be no change to the GST
* WA, ACT say Tony Abbott should increase GST to pay for health, education improvements
* QLD, Victoria want changes to GST revenue distribution, say they are being short-changed
* Accountancy firm says GST reform is needed to stave off future debt problems

In the lead-up to this year's federal election, Labor ran an advertising campaign warning that a Coalition Government would increase the GST. But they are just great big liars, like many of their supporters... right Monk?

At the time Tony Abbott made an election promise to rule out changes.

But Labor has seized on the Coalition's decision, before the election, to include the GST in a planned tax review. Which is a completely reasonable decision

Acting ALP leader Chris Bowen insists Mr Abbott invited debate by leaving his options open.

"If you are not going to increase the GST then why include it in the review?" he said. yet Abbott said... 1/ there would be a review of the tax system, 2/ it would include the GST, 3/ there would be no changes to the GST during the next term of government, 4/ any changes would be brought to the people at an election. Bowen like Monkey Boy is an idiot or a liar or both.

"This is the fundamental inconsistency and illogicality of Tony Abbott's approach during the federal election.

"He got himself caught up on several occasions, said he'd have a review of it but he'd never increase it and that makes no sense at all. Now we're seeing that play out for all to see." See the truth above...

Mr Abbott has committed his Government to produce a white paper on tax reform within two years and take proposals from the review to the next election. ta daaaah :thumb
