Chard, old girl, you have no idea of my views of gun control. Probably because your brain is atrophied.
We could not do there what happened here.

Seriously, The Daily Show is a comedy show (one with a blindingly obvious anti-gun bias, btw), not an actual reliable source of information. If you get your info from those jackasses then let me know so I can FedEx you some coloring books, crayons, and a crash helmet so you can occupy yourself in a safe fashion.
Saying that you cannot compare gun control issues between the US and Australia is ludicrous given the vast differences, for example in how we handle what sorts of firearms are legal to sell and buy. Before the Port Arthur shootings Australian and US law wasn't that dissimilar with the except of what we can buy under the provisions of the National Firearms Act (Machine gun, cannon, explosive devices, sound suppressors, ect). Afterwards your country lost it's fucking mind and now you have to jump through hoops for shit like pump action shotguns (Seriously, I can a Remington 870 12ga shotgun for less than $250 at my local Walmart and walk out the door with it and a box of shells in about 20-30min). It's entirely valid to compare and contrast the two.
P.S. John Oliver is a fucking idiot.

Well despite the murder rate in OZ not changing in over a century, plenty of firearms were outlawed in OZ in 1996-7 (Qld held out for a year).Jovial_Monk wrote:Too many fucking guns in the US, any madman can get one and does!
So pump action shotguns were banned, but not lever action shotguns which reload just as quickly, not pump action rifles which have far more range and accuracy that a shotgun.
Y'see these laws were not drafted or enacted in any coherent manner. Certain items were picked out as scary and banned, seemingly because a bad guy used one in a movie.
16 years later there are more outlawed weapons in the country than ever because black market values have made them worth smuggling.
And as the prices are becoming prohibitively expensive, ordinary Joe Blo can't compete with cashed up crims, so the weapons wind up in the hands of those such restriction are supposed to prevent.

Actually, I think you'll find that semi automatic shotguns are still legal (at least they are in NSW), it's just the number of round they can hold has been limited to 5. In Australia you can legally get access to any hunting weapon you may want (unless you are a "bad man"), just by showing that you have a place to use them. It's the military style, assault rifles, high capacity semi-autos and hand-guns that are most heavily regulated... as they should be.

While it may sound strange but I am glad that this incident is the result of a single nutter going postal at work.
If it was anymore than that..... well the less said the better.

You see the exact same thing in a few US states. For example, the State of California banned rifles chambered in .50BMG because of a vague and poorly defined notion that these rifles could blow up airplanes and stupid shit. This is despite there not being a single use of any weapon chambered in .50BMG being used in the commission of a crime in the US since John Moses Browning invented the cartridge.Outlaw Yogi wrote:Well despite the murder rate in OZ not changing in over a century, plenty of firearms were outlawed in OZ in 1996-7 (Qld held out for a year).

We've even tried banned "assault rifles", but the qualifications for what was and wasn't an "assault rifle" were so poorly defined that it basically amounted to "any scary black rifle". The Assault Weapons Ban lasted from 1994 to 2004 and guess what impact it had on gun crime. If you said "not a single fucking bit" then give yourself a cookie.
This kind of thing is typical of what happens when your government legislates on fear instead of on knowledge and reason. Knee-jerk reaction, feel good laws banning firearms only serves to make some people feel like they've accomplished something with out actually finding and combating the actual causes of gun crime.
