Russia is clever they now have a proposal for Syria to handover all chemical weapons to UN to prevent US attack.

The Russians took an off-the-cuff remark by Secretary of State Asshat, er, Kerry and ran with it. Russia is more concerned about possibly losing a military and industrial client then anything else.

Syria has not agreed yet.

I really hope Assad pulls his head out of his ass and takes the Russian-Kerry plan. The last goddamn thing we need is yet another bush war with middle eastern peckerheads and it'd be nice to see King Barry the Unwise get told "no, you may not bomb more brown people" by Congress.

The only update is Obama saying the idea was discussed when he had his 20 minute meeting with Putin at the G20. he must appear presidential even if this point was just mentioned in passing.

I hope they pull this deal off and it opens the way to a dialogue with the Syrian regime. I am concerned what they would be replaced with. we don't need another west hating country run by extremists. We have generated enough of those.

Obama is not seeking approval at the moment for an attack, awaiting the outcome of the diplomatic solution proposed by Russia.

The big stumbling blocks are will there be a set timeline for Syria to hand off control of their CW stocks and what consequences (if any) will there be for Syria if they fail to deliver all of their CW stocks on time. If there isn't a set time or the time is ridiculously long, and if there's no consequences for failure then this is really all just another episode of "Russians are dicks" theater.

Either way, got to admire Putin for at least attempting to find a solution that allows all the major parties involved to save face. Say what you will, but Vladimir is one cagey son of bitch like that.

An Australian man is suspected of carrying out a suicide bombing attack in Syria on behalf of the proscribed terror group the al-Nusrah Front.

Photos of the suspected bomber with his face blurred out have been circulating on social media websites as community members in Australia attempted to verify his identity.

Some sites were reporting that the man was from Queensland and had travelled to Syria with his wife before sending her back to Australia just a short time ago.

The man, referred to by multiple jihadist social media accounts as "Abu Asma al-Australi", died following a car-bomb attack on a school where troops had been stationed in the city of Deir al-Zor, the sixth largest in the war torn country.

A spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said the Australian Government was aware of reports that an Australian had killed himself in a suicide bombing in eastern Syria, but could not confirm any of the speculation.

He said the government is seriously concerned that Australians are fighting in Syria, including some with al- Qaeda linked al-Nusrah.
