The budget

Well, nothing too terrifying :) Despite speculation about "tough budgets".

A tough budget (attempting to balance it during a recession) would have reduced the economy to rubble. Fair bit of infrastructure spending by the looks - looks like Adelaide will do OK with public transport infrastructure (o-Bahrn) and other stuff :) As will lots of other places.

All that infrastructure provision will need to employ quite a lot of workers. Good. Well done in general.

Of course you would have. Balanced opinion and objective is something you try desperately to avoid with laughable results

The cretinous oppositions reply will be saturating the media today to the extent that no-one will be able to avoid hearing it.

Hmm. A quick glance over the right-wing snot rag The Australian - I can't actually see any comments by Allbull's deadbeats. Never mind, I 'm sure they had about as much intelligent commentry to make as IQ.

It was great to see some of Howard's welfare to the rich removed or reduced--the Financial Review lauds Labor's restructuring of the Budget leading towards structural budget surpluses as the economy recovers. I would have liked to see a bit more of that to fund an increase in unemployment benefits which would be very stimulatory--can't really save on the dole, need to spend pretty much everything you get. Loved the extra Uni places and help for Uni students.

Dunno if tax thresholds were increased, if not the budget will benefit from bracket creep.

Yes, my state did well. The long runs N & S of the railway will be lengthened in the south, Noarlunga line to be extended to Seaford and up north around Gawler work will be done to improve the line and the whole N-S line will be electrified.

Hehehehe Greens whinge Rudd not working hard enough on Global Warming, but electric not diesel trains, and the longer southern line will mean a reduction in emissions of GHG :)

Access Economics would like to see lots more savings. These people were trenchant critics of Costello, pointing out all Tip's budgets were structurally in deficit and calling for reform of the budget structure, and this would have been much easier in the boom years when confidence, and that would be helping us now: with all those tax cuts to the upper brackets company tax became much more important than previous in the make up of tax receipts and the collapse of the mining boom caused the rapid and radical collapse of tax revenue we have seen.

Could Swan have done more? I would have loved seeing the tax cuts postponed and the baby bonus removed. In practice I think he has done nearly as well as can be expected in these difficult times.

Ross Gittins in the budget lockup.

Looks like Swannee WAS very tough on higher incomes. On ya, Swannee, those on high incomes did exceptionally well under the Rodent so they can do their bit now! Listen a bit later in the video Ross is talking about the carrot and stick, interesting.

Parks department abolished
DAMIEN BROWN

UPDATE 1.05pm: PREMIER David Bartlett today confirmed an entire government department will be abolished.

Staff within the Department of Environment, Parks, Heritage and the Arts were informed yesterday that their department would be slashed.
The decision comes as the state tries to fill a $1 billion State Budget blackhole.

Yeah, saw that somewhere else. He just gonna fire the public servants? State revenue will be way down with less GST due the recession--or is this a way to grease the path to a Gunns pulp mill?

If that department slashing is fair dinkum, it does not bode well for public sector workers in my state. A state government budget does function like a larger version of a household budget, and with the collapse of the mining boom, QLD (and WA) state government revenues will be way down.
