They're not even in office yet - but have now reneged on their often repeated promises that they would deliver a surplus in the first year.
It was only a couple of days ago they were boasting about saving $30 billion - now it's $10 billion and no surplus will be delivered. They won't even commit to a small surplus. Of course the devotees will claim it's sensible policy and maybe it is, but what happened to their promises? If they're backflipping now - how many commitments will they break if they win?
Of course the savings the Coalition will make will hit those on the lowest incomes, by implementing a range of new taxes and sacking public servants - but that's no surprise.
The Coalition will pay for its campaign promises by raising taxes on business, cutting support for middle-income and low-income earners, and cutting environmental programs, under the list of savings given out by shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey and shadow finance minister Andrew Robb.
Among the savings the Coalition has embraced, however, are an increase in tobacco excise raising $5.8 billion over four years, a new banking levy raising $700 million, more tax collection on unpaid superannuation to bring $800 million, and accessing more inactive super accounts to raise $600 million. An increase in visa charges will bring $500 million and a temporary increase in the public service efficiency dividend to 2.5 per cent will provide another $1.8 billion.
Mr Hockey said the prime task of an incoming government was to axe the carbon and mining taxes and to dump a raft of unaffordable measures attached to them.
This would result in the abolition of the School Kids Bonus, clawing back $4.6 billion, and the slashing of 12,000 public service jobs, saving $5.2 billion. Nearly $4 billion would also be recovered from not proceeding with the low income superannuation contribution, while small business will lose its instant asset write-off, the loss carry-back provisions and a planned phase-down of the interest withholding tax, ripping a combined $4.2 billion from the sector over four years.

Do you have a link where Mr Abbott has stated that they would deliver a surplus in the first year?
I recall Mr Abbott saying that he may get it in the first term, but not the first year.
It would be impossible for any government to get a surplus in the first year mainly because the real state of the books has not been discovered.
What the ALP have admitted to is a huge deficit but whether that is the $40billion or the most likely $100billion is not yet known.
Even the $40billion would be impossible to overcome in one year.

Mantra, I read this far then started to chuckle...

Sorry.
They're not even in office yet - but have now reneged on their often repeated promises that they would deliver a surplus in the first year.

When did Tony Abbott promise to restore a YET TO BE DETERMINED deficit to surplus in the first year Mantra?
I'm inclined to think our deficit is worse than Labor advise... given their rather changeable budget figures.

Read my post properly - I didn't specifically say Abbott said this - I said the Coalition promised a budget surplus in its first year in office.
FEDERAL Opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey says the Coalition will deliver a Budget surplus in its first year in office and won't follow Labor in rolling out a stimulus package in the event of another downturn.
In his sharpest statement yet on the Coalition's fiscal and economic aims,
Mr Hockey told a business forum in Sydney today that a set of medium-term budgeting rules under an Abbott Government would ensure "Australia once again lives within its means".
"Based on current data, we will achieve a surplus in our first year of office and we will achieve a cash surplus in every year in our first term," he said.

IDIOT!!!
not backflip.
Only an idiot would be posting a so-called promise from back in March 2012... one that stated...
and I QUOTE...
"Based on current data, we will achieve a surplus in our first year of office and we will achieve a cash surplus in every year in our first term," he said.

and call it a backflip.
Yes that's right
MARCH 2012... been a few forecast changes since then eh... almost 2 budgets ago when the ALP were (always) forecasting a surplus. One they never managed to create in 11 or so budgets, yet keep on promising us...
Oh and since we are talking about TYPICAL backflips how about listing all those other typical backflips mantra?
Hey I've got one for you...
THERE WILL BE NO CARBON TAX UNDER THE GOVERNMENT I LEAD... backflip of the century... not to mention kevin's superannuation promise etc, etc, etc....

Excuses excuses and not very good ones at that. Has the media got it wrong? Of course you never get it wrong do you?
So what if the promise was made last year - the problem for them is that the Coalition's porkbarrelling is so out of control they've had to renege. Their savings a few days ago were $30 billion - yesterday it was $10 billion.
Abbott can't even say how he's going to pay for everything.
He's also saying now there is a $17 billion savings. What happened to the $70 billion savings a few weeks ago?
He's an incompetent liar.
A confident Tony Abbott has outlined a 10-year plan for Australia at his official campaign launch that includes restoring the full health insurance rebate, cutting the size of government and increasing defence spending.
But despite railing against Labor's spending, he has abandoned a commitment to get the budget back into the black before Labor's four-year timeline, nor did he detail his own policy costings.

Why should I admit I'm wrong when I just proved you were?
And you are about so many things on so many occasions.
Now you're making other vague claims and trying to move the goalposts.

I don't see that at all, quite the opposite from what I have read.
There maybe some who are challenged by your intellect and may wish to discredit or disencourage you and attempt to diminish your confidence. But really that reflects more on their own vulnerabilities than upon yourself.
Maybe they are trying to silent your voting right as they maybe feel threatened you will vote for someone other than themselves.

A more recent promise by Abbott - 8 months ago, to have a budget surplus in the first term has also been withdrawn. Now it's going to take ten years. Will he be in office for ten years? Hardly likely especially if he say he can't deliver a surplus for a decade. What a cop out.
Tony Abbott has abandoned his intention to return the budget to surplus in the first term of a Coalition government, saying instead that voters would know before the 2016 election when the economy would be back in the black.
Launching the Liberal Party’s campaign in Brisbane on Sunday, the Opposition Leader outlined a 10-year timetable in which he promised to return the budget to a strong surplus of 1 per cent of GDP, by which time there may have been three more elections.
Mr Abbott also pushed out the timetable for meaningful tax reform, saying “if our vision is realised, within 10 years, Australia will have lower, simpler, fairer taxes”.
http://www.afr.com/p/national/abbott_ab ... gAdMNLtfYN
Any explanation as to his huge variations in his "savings"? First $70 billion, then $30 billion to $10 billion to $17 billion. The poor muddleheaded bloke doesn't know whether he's coming or going.
Abbott will be cutting back services to those who need it. He'll be increasing taxes to the ordinary taxpayer and small businesses, cutting out family payments to low and middle income earners, but restoring the generous health funding to the wealthiest and ensuring professional women get a larger superannuation payout than those on low incomes.
"
A truck driver attacked Mr Abbott's paid parental leave scheme, saying forklift drivers shouldn't be punished so a "pretty little lady lawyer on the North Shore" earning $150,000 can get $75,000 from taxpayers to have a child"
