prove it
Who invented; the stump-jump plough, the fridge, torpedo, aspro, ute, Penicillan, Hills hoist, Victor Mower, the black box, bionic ear, gene shears, Gardasil...
Gee the UK are getting shafted
penicillin (alexander fleming - scot)
refrigerator (william cullen - scot)
torpedo (robert whitehead -pom)

Australia did also invent the tank, the esky, wine casks, frozen embryos, powerboards, ultrasound, dim sims and vegemite and of course the dual flusher - even an underwater PC!!!

Sorry never heard of Florey eh....
The story of penicillin - the first antibiotic used successfully to treat people with serious infectious diseases - begins with a bit of luck. Alexander Fleming, a British scientist, noticed in 1928 that mould had prevented the growth of bacteria in his lab. But the main plot of the story involves the rediscovery of penicillin 10 years later by an Australian scientist born one hundred years ago this year. Howard Florey and his dedicated team's systematic, detailed work transformed penicillin from an interesting observation into a life saver.

I won't even bother to go into the history of the others.

Today we don't even make it onto the list of the global hierarchy of inventions. Maybe we were once a bright nation - but definitely not any longer.
The legacy of these foundations is a culture of pragmatic decision making that although sometimes leads to hair-brain ideas, usually show great resourcefulness and adaptability.
Hairbrained maybe, but resourceful and adaptable? I don't think so. The giant quarry we've become today is proof that we have become a very regressive nation which rejects innovation, but embraces anything tried, tested and then imported from another nation.

Helicobacter pylori, previously named Campylobacter pyloridis, is a Gram-negative, microaerophilic bacterium found in the stomach. It was identified in 1982 by Australian scientists Barry Marshall and Robin Warren, who found that it was present in patients with chronic gastritis and gastric ulcers, conditions that were not previously believed to have a microbial cause.

Unfortunately, it took almost 10 years before they received any sort of formal recognition by way of medical journal articles, given big Pharma in the US would rather we continued ingesting their anti-acid relieving medications, (ie, Mylanta, Gavascon etc) , this opposed to our simply taking a one-off course of antibiotics to cure it.

For those of you who suffer with recurrent heartburn or gastric reflux, and have not had a simple Helli-pylory breath test at your GP's.... now might be a good time to have the test, or risk developing stomach/oesophageal cancer later on down the track.

:Hi

They ended up giving them a Nobel prize.... some 23 years later, when they had no choice but to formally recognise their contribution.

Mantra, I think we are most underrated, we should be proud of ourselves, we have come a long way since our humble beginnings, and are among the top 10 most prosperous and happiest nations in the world.

Australian inventions include the very old, such as woomera, and the very new, such as the scramjet, first fired at the Woomera rocket range. The Australian government has suggested that Australian inventiveness springs from the nation's geography and isolation.[1] Perhaps due to its status as an island continent connected to the rest of the world only by air and sea, Australians have been leaders in inventions relating to both maritime and aeronautical matters, including powered flight, the black box flight recorder, the inflatable escape slide, the surf ski, the wave-piercing catamaran winged keel. Since the earliest days of European settlement, Australia's main industries have been agriculture and mining, and Australian inventions in these areas have included the grain stripper, the stump jump plough, mechanical sheep shears, the Dethridge water wheel, the froth flotation ore separation process, the instream ore analysis process and the buffalo fly trap.

Yeah I guess you'not heard of alexander fleming
"Alexander Fleming, who is credited with discovering penicillin in 1928.

The discovery of penicillin is attributed to Scottish scientist and Nobel laureate Alexander Fleming in 1928.[12] He showed that, if Penicillium rubens[13] were grown in the appropriate substrate, it would exude a substance with antibiotic properties, which he dubbed penicillin. This serendipitous observation began the modern era of antibiotic discovery. The development of penicillin for use as a medicine is attributed to the Australian Nobel laureate Howard Walter Florey, together with the German Nobel laureate Ernst Chain and the English biochemist Norman Heatley.

The first published reference appears in the publication of the Royal Society in 1875, by John Tyndall.[14] Joaquim Monteiro Caminhoá, Professor of Botany and Zoology of the Faculty of Medicine of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, also recognised the antibiotic activity of Penicillium and other fungi in 1877. In his book, Elements of General and Medical Botany (under a section titled "Useful fungi, harmful and curious"), he stated:

"The mould (Penicillium infestans, Penicillium glaucum, figure 1680, Ascophora and many others) is useful because it feeds on decaying organic matter and destroys putrifaction so that, as a rule, the odour of infection does not occur, or is produced in infinitely smaller amounts."

You're a pathetic twit. You've got no kids - so you can go along in your own selfish blinkered way ignoring the destruction of this country. What do you care about Australia's future? I do care and that's why I'm so disappointed by those in government who have allowed its dissipation. It started a long time before this Labor government. We are no longer a brilliant country. We fall behind in education and innovation and if you were honest - you'd admit that. We've sold out to the highest bidder - most of them foreign. We have become a dumb nation and reading your posts - it's easy to see you're one of the dumbest.

Mining has overtaken everything - farms, pristine areas and even homes are affected - yet Abbott wants to remove any skerrick of their tax obligations. Let them send their profits from our resources overseas. We have conglomerations like Sydney Airport making billions in profit. They haven't paid tax in ten years and have even been given tax credits. Mining corporations have made similar deals with various levels of government. Even mining royalties have been cut back because of the numerous credits allocated to them by our slack politicians.

We can be considered no better than a developing country simply because much of the population is uneducated and will sell anything of value for a quick buck. Abbott will finish off the job that Howard started and Rudd ran with. There is nothing Abbott will do which will change the ordinary person's lifestyle aside from increase the division between the "haves" and "have nots". And guess what Roach - you're a have not and you're voting for a dill who will make your life even more impoverished than it already is.

You're a pathetic twit. Nope not me... You've got no kids - so you can go along in your own selfish blinkered way ignoring the destruction of this country. Nope not me... What do you care about Australia's future? More than you I'd say.. I do care and that's why I'm so disappointed by those in government who have allowed its dissipation. It started a long time before this Labor government. We are no longer a brilliant country. We are mantra the fact you are such an ignorant pessimist doesn't mean the rest of us should ignore reality. We fall behind in education and innovation and if you were honest - you'd admit that. We fall behind in Education because of the stupid progressive LW curriculum and stupid ideas brought into education by the Left... remember who has been in charge of that in NSW for such a very long time... We've sold out to the highest bidder - most of them foreign. We have become a dumb nation and reading your posts - it's easy to see you're one of the dumbest. You should piss off if you cant handle the truth or accept it without your pissant ad hom and flaming.

Mining has overtaken everything - farms, pristine areas and even homes are affected - yet Abbott wants to remove any skerrick of their tax obligations. Gee I wonder who have been in charge of the majority of state governments then for such a long time who broke QLD and made it so desperate for money they sold out to CSG etc. Let them send their profits from our resources overseas. We have conglomerations like Sydney Airport making billions in profit. They haven't paid tax in ten years and have even been given tax credits. Well that is being disputed, and the fact it was sold may have a lot to do with reigning in the Labor deficit from the keating years. just imagine wjat it would take to reign in the RuddGillardRudd debt. Mining corporations have made similar deals with various levels of government. Even mining royalties have been cut back because of the numerous credits allocated to them by our slack politicians. You do like to waffle don't you.

We can be considered no better than a developing country simply because much of the population is uneducated and will sell anything of value for a quick buck. yawn more rubbish. Abbott will finish off the job that Howard started and Rudd ran with. There is nothing Abbott will do which will change the ordinary person's lifestyle aside from increase the division between the "haves" and "have nots". yawn rubbish hate bias crap And guess what Roach - you're a have not and you're voting for a dill who will make your life even more impoverished than it already is.
You keep proving what a hate driven empty headed moron you are mantra. How would you have a clue whether I'm a have or a have not... hmmmm.... I know I'm not stupid enough to give this Rudd idiot and his incompetent bunch of clowns another go. Nor dumb enough to vote for the Greens.
