So we should implement the coalitions plans, save the $15bn... invest further post 2020 then address the next steps when there is money in the bank.

That makes sense.

Spending money that is not there is vandalism.... not investing. Particularly when it is a big bet and no compelling event to drive it.

Cost difference is $1Bn, soon after the huge power cost of tens of thousands of nodes makes Fraudband more expensive.

When a couple buys a house—they usually have to borrow, a mortgage, maybe a second mortgage. That is what the government is doing with the NBN.

There are two events driving the rollout of the NBN:

1. The copper just keeps deteriorating

2. The exponential increase in data downloads and uploads. Before Fraudband is finished it will be obsolete. You would think an engineer in telecomms would realise that.

Melbourne University?
Really?
Why not just ask them do they want more funding?
If you are gonna ask politically biased people who are computer geeks what they want they will always go with the current NBN plan.
Seems all your objectivity just got shafted SN.
No more concerns about cost or technology advances or functionality on a needs basis.
As for the lie about Fox Murdoch and the NBN... it is just a smear campaign from Labor and bears no semblance to reality.
You may as well join the conspiranuts at the Guardian.

What do I think about both plans?
I think they are very similar. (Check it out on Delimiter if you don't believe me).
I think it will cost at least 3 times the Lib policy.
I think there are and will be further problems with implementation.
I think if we could afford it then the Labor policy is better. Of course I'd opt for a Ferrari instead of a VW beetle.
I think we cannot currently afford it.
I think FTTN provided the vast majority of us a great and acceptable increase in capabilities for years to come.
I think the rollout should have been better organised and been implemented state by state, so as not to be found wanting if technology changes suddenly. As it does in IT, considering the rollout time required.
I think people who require FTTH or FTTP (sic) will be made available for domestic use if there is a requirement whether it is paid for by individuals or becomes an inevitable but affordable universal upgrade.
I think by 2050 there will be great changes in technology and that the global trend that is currently occuring with acceptance of mobile broadband will be the norm. Making the current project redundant.
I think the speeds proffered by the government and NBN Co are guesstimates and will be effected by many variables and we in the industry all know best case scenarios are not the modal result.
I expect that the free connections and subsidised connections now will not be sustained and that the costs of using NBN Co infrastructure will make connection costs especially for the "premium" package unaffordable to the majority of Australians.

Just a few thoughts on it SN.

and...
Considering Crikey's LW bias perhaps this is a more balanced argument.

http://www.crikey.com.au/2013/04/10/bro ... her=mobile

The current business plan for NBN Co is "build it and they will come"... this however negates the fact of cost to the user. Also the current uptake of the offered product regardless of it's imposed presence does not auger well for the future. Nor does the global trend of mobility vs the fixed line.

Factchecker having a bit each way as it fails to really check...
Mr Turnbull is on strong ground when he says the final cost of Labor's NBN would be likely to exceed the claimed $44.1 billion. Most major projects go over budget. Australia's Parliament House was to cost $220 million. It eventually cost five times as much, $1.1 billion. The Sydney Opera House cost 14 times the original estimate. But the Snowy Mountains Scheme is said to have been delivered on time and on budget. Labor's NBN is bigger than them all.

Fraudband, if attempted which it won’t be, would similarly blow out. A HUGE amount of copper would need not remediation but replacement. Replacing copper with copper is the epitome of stupid.

Frankly, I would like to see NBN Co pay a bit more to smooth the rollout especially in the early stages.

A LIBERAL MP has endorsed Labor’s National Broadband Network by switching it on in her electorate with Deputy Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The Member for Macquarie Louise Markus smiled as she pressed an over-sized orange button to connect the Western Sydney suburb of Windsor to the network.

“Louise Markus was switching on the NBN that the Coalition will deny to millions of Australians,” Mr Albanese told The Australian.

“If Louise Markus wants the NBN, she needs to vote Labor.”

Ms Markus did not return phone calls while opposition broadband spokesman Malcolm Turnbull is yet to comment.

Then again, most Libs can’t think.

She is not the only Lib or Nat politician to recognise that the NBN is a great project, especially for the Bush. Lots of LNP MPs have lobbied NBN Co to roll out in their areas first, rural councils are negotiating with NBN Co to have the NBN rolled out in their areas, making a co-payment towards the cost.

Happened in her electorate.
Photo opportunity.
What pollie will turn their backs on that invite?
Even if they are of a different political party than the government.
She is the federal MP.
