Unemployment rate DROPS
"Australia's unemployment rate has posted a surprise drop, the latest sign that a recovery may be on the horizon.
The unemployment rate dipped to 5.4% in April from 5.7% in March, as companies grappling with the recession held on to workers in anticipation of a rise in demand. Economists had expected a 0.2% increase that would have would have pushed the rate to 5.9%.
Today's result is the strongest since last July, before the global financial crisis accelerated"
The Liberals will be horrified, Turnbull has been sweating on the unemployment rate to rise, just last night he boo hoo'd good retail figures with the line" lets wait and see the unemployment figures, that will tell the real story" well the story is told Mal, what do think now?http://business.smh.com.au/business/sur ... -avyz.html

Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
I have said all along that Rudd/Swan/Tanner are making all the right moves!
Can you imagine Costello? He would be bloody hopeless! He would give big tax cuts to the rich as usual, cut spending programs (like the fluffy bunny did the $200, C/w Dental Scheme) and generally run the economy into the ground. Howard would still be pork barreling too. Secretly, I bet Tip is happy he is no longer Treasurer!

Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
This is a survey that captures about 0.24 per cent (of the population) and there are compositional issues … so it’s a relatively small sample.”

If China really is recovering and commodity prices are improving then that is very good news for the economy

Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
this drop in unemployment was not expected by analysts it seems..
50,000 new fulltime jobs were created in the month of April as a result of the stimulus buffering the economy. To date the Govt havent been able to counter the oppostions argument that "not one new job has been created ". And the only thing Labor could do was point to new housing appprovals and trade figures..now they have the hard economic data to vindicate the stimulus strategy for both Decemeber and March.

Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
"just .024% of the population"
Which is still 24,000 people surveyed. Just as they were when Tip pretended the job rises from the mining boom were down to him

Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
This probably means the interest rate will remain stable for a while. Which is fine.
You vote, you lose!
Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
Hahahhaha stupid Greg Sheridan on Q&A tried to dismiss the good result, only a very few surveyed 400% margin of error. And this total fuckwit is a journalist with the Australian?????
24,000 are surveyed each month, margin of error of .2%

Re: Unemployment rate DROPS
What has not been discussed much is the underemployment as people, like private school teachers, have had to take pay cuts and lots of others have had their working hours reduced, have been told to take all their accrued leave & long service leave, e.g. the shiftworkers at Holden.
This is reflected in the increase of homebrew store business--more people with more time but less money.
If the economy does not improve soon businesses might have to start letting go full time staff. America is a basket case, only improvement there is a slight slowing down of the number of people fired from their jobs each month. Millions there are unemployed. Japan in recession--where will the recovery come from?
