Doesn't say much for the US education system.
Australia is the world's most arid populated continent.
To be honest, I didn't appreciate how big the US is and how rich it is in all resources including habitable land until I went there.

We call ourselves the lucky country. It think it would be the US if they had more of Australia culture of fair play and a system that allowed even the poor to live decent lives.

I was recently in a major US city. The number of black people begging in the city was a shock and even noticeable for US citizens. This was one of the richest cities in the US.

The richest country in the world cannot be bothered to look after it's people. You either have money... or you die. Maybe that is what makes it powerful. Everyone has to strive or die and it provides a system that really rewards innovation and commerce. Commerce is the path to power.

While Australia maintains the welfare state as part of the new social contract after WWII (copied from UK) it can never be a power because it's people don't have the same killer instinct when it comes to playing the game of life and accumulation of wealth/power.

Most Aussies never, ever want Australia to be like the USA. The USA is a great place to visit (and make money) but there are other things that the US doesn't have that Australia does. Nor does Britain, Europe and elsewhere for that matter.

Australia is unique and we like it that way. We real Aussies do NOT want to follow what has happened in the USA, Britain and Europe ............

Take a stroll around Sydney some time. Lots of people begging and living in doorways.

Australia is not doing such a flash job of it either.

I have been away 13 years now.

I do notice the difference when I come home. It feel more like America on every visit.

When a say a lot of beggars I mean a lot. I mean 3 or 4 people on every street corner of the city.

Australia does a much better job than it thinks in looking after it's people. Something to be proud of.

When you consider we have less than 10% of the population of the USA it isn't that much different, really.

That sort of situation/attitude leads to increases in crime.

I think Fuller would say that even if Australia were lush and verdant with a much larger population and an American-style political system and culture it still would have no chance of being a world power.

Which is pretty much meaningless since, like every other continent in the world, most of you population is towards the coastline. What is going to prevent Australia from becoming a world power isn't deserts or Fuller's absurd bullshit about geographic location, it's you having the less than the population of California spread across almost the same area as the Continental US minus Alaska. You just don't have the man power and it's a bitch to concentrate what manpower you do have.

I'm not the one saying Australia is a big country etc, etc, etc... let's swap countries... the US has much more water and puhlease don't even try to tell me the centre of your country is as deserted as ours... after all ours is mostly desert. You need water to support a population... MOST ARID POPULATED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD... let me know when you get it.
