America WILL NOT protect us.
THE Rudd Government has acknowledged that the supremacy of the US has begun to fade and Australia is preparing for an uncertain future in which it can no longer rely on the protection of its main ally.
In a fundamental shift in defence plans, the Government has explicitly declared that US primacy in the Asia-Pacific - the bedrock of the nation's security since World War II - may be ending. The change, caused by the rise of new great powers such as China, is set to produce growing regional tensions and a "sudden deterioration" in Australia's security.
A 20-year defence blueprint, to be released by the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, today, prepares for a multibillion-dollar build-up of naval and air forces to ensure that Australia can defend its northern and sea approaches.
It says a regional shake-up is under way but US supremacy will not be blunted before 2030 and assesses the chances of an attack on Australia in the short term as "very remote

Nice to see that "very remote" there, particualrly because of China's reaction to the defence plans. Pity that was not reported more largely earlier on when this was splashed about by the media.

Re: America WILL NOT protect us.
A lot of things can happen in 30 years to a country like China, a country with a population so large, (and full of minority groups who resent the present racial dominance of the Han Chinese), a country that MUST sustain economic growth to hold it all together.
China’s military growth is dramatic but she is still some way off from air and naval equality with the US; still it is wise to plan as it is quite possible China will be an aggressive regional (East Pacific) power in 30 years time.
The real solution is the same as it was meeting the Soviet threat, a democratic Pacific-Asian containment alliance. This means re-arming Japan and closer military ties with democratic India. Both nations fear China far more than the US and Australia currently does.

I think Defence Mandarins are off their trolley.
Seriously.
Their is no way you can nuke an Imperial footborn force off the planet. You would be in huge big trouble. A soldier marches on his stomach, not planes, boats and tanks.
30 Years??>??, cmon FFS, are we still in Boomer wonderland????? The era of the Bigot is coming to a close; everywhere around the world, the change is obvious.
The last vestages of the Boomer era will remain and perhaps die with the State. Everything else will be unsettled; isnt that obvious?? States everywhere are being challenged, even our own; though the local Boomers seek to deny & hide the challenge. There is no way the Boomers can replicate their prior shinning existance; no way perhaps that the younger generations can access a similar lifetime existance and expectation. The Boomers existance has been an anomally of history, and the forces are large who wont want it repeated.
The only possibility is what was seen in 1939> complete and utter ignorance. History proves such times as both warning and signal.
Let us not be fooled by more Boomers lies.
They are only there to make comfort for the BBGen.

WTF is WI talking about, anybody know?
Yeah a new Pacific community, just like Rudd mentioned out loud a while ago.

And America is very unlikely to come to our aid if we were to be attacked. Not now, not back just after the ANZUS scrap of paper was signed, never.

Re: America WILL NOT protect us.
America will as long as she can, there is little informed doubt about this. This is a country that uses military power often to protect non-allies, such as the Bosnian and Kosovar Muslims. She will front up for one of her most important Pacific allies, even against China, as she did in South Korea.
The real question is who would replace America if she should collapse or fall into a more parochial nationalism as China practices. China certainly would not as her foreign policy has no elements of idealism in it; China does what is solely best for China, even attacking former allies if it is in China’s economic or strategic interest. China will never be a power concerned with freedom and will only be concerned with global stability where and when it benefits China. Where it benefits China she will allow, even facilitate barbarism, such as in genocidal Sudan.
The moribund EU can not, has not ever been able to act effectively without passing the ball to US led NATO, and has some very serious long term demographic problems (one of the ironies of the welfare state is that it claims to provide a better life, so good people do not want to seem to reproduce in it and pass such a life on to future generations) and so has imported large numbers of Muslims. This will increasingly tear out their social cohesion (as in the Paris riots a few years ago) or force them to slowly abandon many of the major premises of Western civilization such as many European nations did with the concept of free speech during the Danish cartoon scandal.
Russia is becoming more authoritarian, also has a demographic problem with ethnic Russians (shockingly poor health outcomes and low birth rates) and so too is becoming more Islamic. Almost one quarter of her armed forces are now Muslims, the only population in Russia healthy enough writ large to take on that arduous profession. Many of these Muslims have a tenuous loyalty to a Russia who decimated Chechnya. Besides Russia too is solely concerned with her narrow nationalistic goals and hardly a responsible actor on behalf of global stability.
The only exception is India. India is a democracy which has fought Isamo fascism much longer than the US, has a growing economy and demographic problems which are improving, not getting worse, holds some of the same secular values (at least the state does) as the US and has shown a willingness to be a responsible global player. As her economy grows she may become an important regional power for democratic stability. A US-Japanese-Indian global alliance is necessary.
And the age of internationalism, or that elusive dream the UN can provide global order, never realized, is deteriorating. Russia completely disregarded the UN when she carved up Georgia, China seems solely interested in uses the Security Council to stop any action against tyrannies she deems necessary to Chinese interest, such as North Korea or Sudan, and the Europeans (with the exception of the UK) use rhetorically posture and pretend they are acting when indeed they no longer can act.
If the US falls or becomes uninterested, much of the world will fall into another dark age.
Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

But I dont expect them to step down anytime soon.
Regardless of what happens to us lesser generations.
The UN/EU/WTF powered World federation of republics -or reich- (ie NWO) is simply an outrages dream, and a fundamentally un-acheivable goal in the present, perhaps not even in one thousand years.
Its all about the feet of Iron & Clay. And their future feats.
Re: America WILL NOT protect us.
That was an excellent post Frogen. It doesn't look like we're left with too many options, other than giving the US all the help we can and finding ways to better protect our own interests which it seems Rudd is doing with this proposed massive increase in military build up. This is something Howard should have done years ago instead of leaving our defence force depleted to the extent it is today.
Re: America WILL NOT protect us.
Yup. Howard's forte on defence and everything else was empty rhetoric.
That and kissing Bush arse.
