The Rudd Government should tackle these vested interests head on. Abolition of the tax expenditures propping up this inefficient and inequitable health system would save taxpayers $6 billion a year. This would be enough to run an extra seven or eight public hospitals of the size of the Royal Melbourne and put basic dental procedures on the Medicare schedule, as was originally proposed when Medibank was being set up in 1974.
