Previous right wing govt started to have problems with unauthorised arrivals in the form of boats packed with 'asylum seekers' leaving Indonesia in hired boats who ditched their passports and papers around 2001. Worked very hard to introduce a range of measures to stop the trade and copped a heap of flack from the left in the form of protesting tie died, dreadlocked, ring through the nose professional unemployed protestors.

The change is Govt to a minority of a socialist leftist govt (ALP) and a far left bunch of wackos (Greens) saw them abandon all the introduced measures that worked to stop the people smuggling trade so that the leftist govt can appear 'humane'.

Like most leftwing ideas, it has managed to kill over 1300 people so far with drownings due to attracting people smugglers (normally expatriate Iranians in Indo) to start up their trade again, promising a trip to Australia, citizenship, dole money, housing, medical and all number of free shit that taxpayers have to cough up for.

Howard said no boat people would set foot on Australian soil - yet he brought all those imprisoned in camps back here and gave them citizenship. Abbott can't turn the boats around because Indonesia won't take them and I doubt he'll take the risk of being hauled before the International Criminal Court for criminal manslaughter.

All those measures did was stop boats from making landfall or refused entry if the boat actually made it.
