Do you have any idea of how Abbott’s daughters’ PPL would work? How the 1.5% levy on the biggest 3500–odd businesses would cascade throughout small business, government and on to householders? Or you think it is OK a single Mum putting her kid through school and working two jobs should have to pay for someone to be able to swan around for 6 months on $75,000 after popping out a brat?

It is a taxpayer provided benefit real easy to rort in family owned companies “Dear Tax Commissioner I pay my wife $150K a year to keep my books. She now has a bun in the oven so in a couple of months you can send her the $75K, alright?” when the wife may have done the books for a couple years 10 years ago but now is more into the liquid lunches.

One class of business affected will be the four big banks. If they passed the cost on to home mortgages it would be the equivalent of 5 basis points interest hike. What the banks (well, Westpac) have said is they will pass it onto business loans, i.e. small to medium business: after all, the banks are subsidising these smaller business with paid parental leave. These businesses will add that to the prices they charge and of course 10% GST on top of that.

Would not more help with childcare be a more efficient way to help working women have babies and return to the workforce?
