Should Australia become a republic?

Post by Super Nova » Thu Jun 06, 2013 8:01 pm

Prompted by this article in the UK.

Australia 'should be a republic once Queen's reign ends'
Australia's should become a republic once the Queen's reign ends, two political foes have said in an unprecedented alliance that reignites the republic debate a decade after it was defeated at referendum.

What is the benefit. Our system works very well without having a political head of state to rival the PM.

I'm for being a republic emotionally. What I don't know is the impact, risks and benefits of being one except the emotional desire to dump our final links to the empire.

Are you for or against?
Why?

That's what I think.

The system works well now. To have an elected present creates real problems for a democracy based on the west minster system. Look a the US as an example.

I would love to dump the crown but the alternative is less palatable.

Republic with popularly elected President having the same power as the GG.

Symbolic move, we need to cut the apron string—our future lies in Asia.

But if elected... they will have some power. Political power.

What we have works reasonably well. I'm not in favour of wasteful spending of billions of dollars for something that no other country gives a fuck about, to change to system that is all but the same but in name.

Gough proved the system works. We can chuck out a piece of shit.

No more than the GG has. If he makes it difficult for a future PM to enslave the people or make war based on lies like Howard did GOOD!

The GG has only had to get involved when the ALP was about to sell all Australians to some dodgy middle eastern 1970s version of a Nigerian scammer.

So what is the point?
