I see that even if the ALP got every cent they (over)forecasted from revenue, they would still be in deficit.

After forecasting a $1.1Bn surplus just 5 months ago that has now turned into a $19.4Bn deficit, the govt still has a net increase, adding $2,285 million in net new government spending from now until June 30 next year.

If you were to get rid of the ALP and install Humphrey B Bear, without doing anything, the economy would improve.

You would be looking at a 5-10% jump in the stock market.
Business and consumer confidence would lift immediately.
Boat arrivals would immediately slow.
Humphrey couldn't waste as much money as the ALP.

This isn't the budget of a numpty. This is the budget of a party that knows it will not be governing during the forward estimates period. This is an extension of thier embassy rooftop strategy. It's a scorched earth budget.

Just $3 billion of the government's $24 billion infrastructure plan will be spent over the forward estimates period, locking in any future government to a long and expensive building plan.

Likewise, the majority of the funding for the Gonski and the NDIS will have to be found the incoming treasurer.

From this I think you can surmise that the ALP party room holds no delusion of winning the current election and the sole intention of this budget is to saddle the incoming government with as much debt as possible. this will not only hasten a return to ALP government perhaps 8 years from now just as the spending commitments near completion and as the coalition are forced to bottom out the economy to meet these budgetary commitments, but will provide the next ALP government with a low point to build from.

And just for good measure, they're tossing any reminants of the old man's legacy while they still can.

As I have always said...they are nothing but economic vandals, but at this rate the half senate looks like the cards could fall the right way so unravelling the flaming bag of shit left on the doorstep by the ALP children should be reversible.
