Tracking Gunfire With a Smartphone

Apr. 25, 2013 — You are walking down the street with a friend. A shot is fired. The two of you duck behind the nearest cover and you pull out your smartphone. A map of the neighborhood pops up on its screen with a large red arrow pointing in the direction the shot came from.

A team of computer engineers from Vanderbilt University's Institute of Software Integrated Systems has made such a scenario possible by developing an inexpensive hardware module and related software that can transform an Android smartphone into a simple shooter location system. They described the new system's capabilities this month at the 12th Association for Computing Machinery/Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks in Philadelphia.

Police are ''fed up'' with gun saturation in Sydney after one of the worst weeks of crime in NSW history.

A sleep-deprived acting Assistant Commissioner Arthur Katsogiannis said it was one of the worst weeks police had experienced, with five deaths and seven public-place shootings in which eight people were wounded.

The week began with the stabbing death of a woman in a western Sydney unit block and ended with a drive-by shooting at Smithfield that left four men critically injured.

''It's certainly one of the worst crime weeks we've had on record,'' Mr Katsogiannis said. ''Of course we are fed up and I think the community is fed up with it.''

NSW Opposition Leader John Robertson was quick to jump on the week's horrifying shooting statistics, accusing the government of allowing a culture of gun violence to go unchecked. ''From shooting in national parks to shooting in Sydney streets, the O'Farrell government is letting guns take over NSW,'' he said.

Police Minister Michael Gallacher hit back, stating: ''For 16 years, Labor was a disgraceful government and while we deliver the reforms to tackle crime, they can only kick cops and scare the public.''

Despite the frustrating week for police, the number of public place shootings has dropped - there were 34 in April last year compared with 10 recorded this month.
