The Safety Review of Thimerosal-containing Vaccines and Neurodevelopmental Disorders Conducted by the Institute of Medicine

In 2001, the Institute of Medicine convened a committee (the Immunization Safety Review Committee) to review selected issues related to immunization safety. [For more information regarding this committee, their charge, and their reports, find the link to IOM's Web site in "Related Links" below.] The IOM has, to date, completed reviews in two areas. The first review by this committee focused on a potential link between autism and the combined mumps, measles, and rubella vaccine. The second review focused on a potential relationship between thimerosal use in vaccines and neurodevelopmental disorders (IOM 2001). This latter issue was brought to the fore primarily as the result of the hypothesis, formulated by S. Bernard and others from Cure Autism Now, that autism is a novel form of mercury poisoning (Bernard et al. 2001); this hypothesis, linking autism to mercury, was based on a comprehensive review of the scientific literature on mercury toxicity.

In its report of October 1, 2001, the IOM's Immunization Safety Review Committee concluded that the evidence was inadequate to either accept or reject a causal relationship between thimerosal exposure from childhood vaccines and the neurodevelopmental disorders of autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and speech or language delay. Additional studies were needed to establish or reject a causal relationship. The Committee did conclude that the hypothesis that exposure to thimerosal-containing vaccines could be associated with neurodevelopmental disorders was biologically plausible.

In 1998, Dr. Andrew Wakefield, a British gastroenterologist, described a new autism phenotype called the regressive autism-enterocolitis syndrome triggered by environmental factors such as measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccination. The speculative vaccination-autism connection decreased parental confidence in public health vaccination programs and created a public health crisis in England and questions about vaccine safety in North America. After 10 years of controversy and investigation, Dr. Wakefield was found guilty of ethical, medical, and scientific misconduct in the publication of the autism paper. Additional studies showed that the data presented were fraudulent. The alleged autism-vaccine connection is, perhaps, the most damaging medical hoax of the last 100 years.

Well, the thiomersal has been removed from the MMR vaccine boxy...and most of all childhood vaccines in fact.

Why?

The fact is... they werent sure themselves, and still aren't, so my philosophy still stands.

When in doubt, leave it (Thiomersal) out.

Theres no excuse not to vaccinate your children here in Australia these days given there are more than enough thiomersal-free renditions of the required vaccines.

And Boxy, I think you will find this article a little more credible.

It was still a total lie that there was any evidence behind it, a lie that you continue to talk up. Hippies and conspiracy nuts... a.k.a kid killers.

What on earth are you talking about?

I agree, vaccination = good.

I just think unnecessary and controversial additives ie thiomersal (which has since been removed from most of our children's vaccines) require more study.

Really, its as simple as that.

And your problem is?

What exactly are you disputing here, something I have written personally?

Because by all accounts, it appears you have missed the part where I said, vaccinating children= good... this and that all my children are fully immunised.

You aren't making a lot of sense... seem to be responding to me as though I oppose vaccines.

Do you need a make-shift adversary, to allude to the falsehood of your actually having some kind of debate?

:bgrin Tragic!

Because by all accounts, it's clear, we all agree immunisation is a good thing.

I'm talking about bullshit like this, where you buy into the AVN lies, hook line and sinker. Stop it already with the lies about autism being linked to thiomeral in any scientific way. It's an urban legend, cooked up by hippies and conspiracy nuts as an excuse to abuse their kids with their delusions about nature automatically giving us all we need.

I have one question for you boxy..... why was thiomersal removed from all Australian routine childhood vaccines, and in what year was it removed?

Look, I am going to go with my gut feeling and nursing background on this and just say, and I'll only say it once more....when in doubt, leave it out.

Thomersal is a mercury-containing preservative used to decrease the potential for microbal contamination of vaccines, when in fact, it's really being used to increase the drugs shelf life, which appeals to both big-pharma and governments world wide, win/win apparently. 8-)
If it were merely the anti-microbal factors to consider, there are plenty of non-mercury alternatives ...as has been demonstrated by the fact they are in fact using them now instead of mercury.

Of course, the only losers are those who have 'allegedly' had adverse reactions to this concerning heavy-metal additive, be it pharmaceutically, environmentally or otherwise, because lets face it, environmentally speaking, there's enough mercury in our natural environment as it is, hence pregnant/lactating woman and children are advised to abstain from consuming certain fish known to contain higher levels of mercury.

Do we really need anymore?
Anymore than is absolutely necessary merely for the want increasing pharmaceutical companies profits?

Boxy, is there really such thing as a safe level of consumable Mercury?

And why are you basing your conclusions on exclusively "industry" funded research?
Why place all your eggs in the one basket, ever heard of a little independent research?

Personally, I don't believe there is a safe level of indigestible/injectable mercury, this and think we should be doing everything in our power to minimise exposure of this harmful heavy metal and known neurotoxin to our children and all society at large wherever possible, this and think adding it to vaccines is both unnecessary and potentially harmful...given the accumulative nature of the substance in the bodies of those who consume it, irrespective of rout.

Boxy, have you delved properly into this controversy, or are you merely purging the pharmaceutical companies and government approved official line after having had a quick google for want of some exhilarating troll material?

If it's me you are trying to piss off, you lost the fight long ago.

Many have tried, and sadly, you too have failed. 8-)

Honestly, autism is the least of our worries now (given they have already removed it from most routine childhood vaccines here in Australia) but if you knew what else mercury has the potential to cause, and what other pharmaceuticals it's being added to under various names you yourself might even re-think your support for it being used in all manner of pharmaceuticals, ... like eye drops for example.

I'm sure you use quite a bit of these with you being a stoner and all.

Hey, be it on your own box-head, it's a personal choice I guess, and I for one have no desire to expose my children to potentially harmful contaminants be they in the form of food or otherwise anytime soon.

To me, it's common sense, why take chances with the second most toxic substance known to man kind, are you aware that mercury stays in your body ..cannot be excreted?

I am no rabid, idiotic fringe-dweller hippie who thinks all vaccines are the sole cause of everything bad in the world... if this were the case, my own kids wouldn't be immunised would they....I am simply exercising a little common sense when it comes to a substance known for it's toxic and accumulative affect on our bodies, this and have ensured my newest addition is being immunsed with a mercury-free product.

Just to be on the safe side.

:)

When it comes to mercury, less is best.

And unlike yourself, I am actually qualified to an opinion this and have studied pharmacology and pharmacokinetics at a tertiary level.

Go chew on a few old mercury thermometres if you feel so passionate about promoting the industry-backed pharmaceutical safety of unnecessary mercury exposure.

8-)

Theres always two sides to a story... at least.
