Labor MPs stunned by Julia Gillard's announcement of election date

LABOR caucus members were today "gobsmacked" at the Prime Minister's announcement of a September 14 election, which triggers the longest election campaign in Australia's history.
But supporters of former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, photographed today in Brisbane cutting up fallen trees with a chainsaw in his storm-battered neighbourhood, say the announcement could make Julia Gillard vulnerable if support from voters dropped to the levels seen during much of last year now that there is focus on an election date.

They have compared the decision to Bob Hawke's announcement in 1984 of a 10-week campaign which saw Labor support drop after then Opposition Leader Andrew Peacock seized the opportunity of being on a closer footing to the government.

One MP said no numbers were being counted for Mr Rudd, who today released statements commending the careers of two supporters, Robert McClelland and Trish Crossin, who will both leave parliament at the election.

An MP said Ms Gillard had given away some of the power of incumbency which could elevate Tony Abbott's profile for eight months before the poll."Hawke went from being a prime minister governing in the lead up to an election to being a caretaker prime minister going to an election," the MP said.

I don't consider high school economics to be an economics background for a businessman or a financial expert or the Treasurer of a Country... do you?

If that was the case I could be Treasurer, hell I could be Foreign Minister or any number of Ministers.
I won a scholarship in Engineering Science... it doesn't make me an Engineer or a Scientist dopey.

A University degree and some practical experience is what I call a background. You do know what a background is don't you?
