1. Cements Tony at the Liberal helm. No Opposition, in Australian history, has ever changed Leader after the date announcement. Tony is the best thing the ALP have going for them at the moment. No it doesn't.
Does the name Bob Hawke mean anything to you? He became leader of the opposition the same day and election was called. Pretty irrelevant same day or a day later etc... The public would expect the campaign to have the one leader right through to the election the same day is about as close as it ever will get, unless there was a death.
