For every ton of carbon you don't burn, I will burn three.
I've taken up burning my oil changes on vehicles. This way I get to cancel out carbon demonizers without having to pay any carbon tax.

I'm interested in compiling a list of activities that increase carbon dioxide output at no additional cost or tax to the user. I welcome any other suggestions.

Breath very heavy all the time, have more sex, even if you are the only one handy
Fart more often, never say excuse me
Kill every plant you see, no carbon removal and burn them
Set bush fires and blame it on tourists
Use everything once and throw it away, causing greater consumption and they all must be manufacture in fossil burning emerging nations
Burn car Tyres after use

Sorry you are wrong it is not a myth AiA.
It was reported widely globally. Since I lived through it I think I'd have a clue about it. I remember front page news stories about it. With quotes from scientists, people from the CSIRO and various meteorological groups.

There was also the famous Time Magazine article... While discussions were ongoing in scientific circles, in their June 24, 1974 issue, Time presented an article titled Another Ice Age? that noted "the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades" but noted that "Some scientists... think that the cooling trend may be only temporary" they were the dissenters of the time. Who ended up being correct.

Newsweek also published several articles, a 1975 article in Newsweek magazine, "The Cooling World", pointed to "ominous signs that the Earth's weather patterns have begun to change" and pointed to "a drop of half a degree in average ground temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere between 1945 and 1968." Also, "The evidence in support of these predictions of global cooling has now begun to accumulate so massively that meteorologists are hard-pressed to keep up with it." and "the present decline has taken the planet about a sixth of the way toward the Ice Age."

Also in the late 1970s there were also several popular books on the topic, including "The Weather Conspiracy: The Coming of the New Ice Age."

In the early 1980s... Concerns about nuclear winter arose from several reports. Similar speculations have appeared over effects due to catastrophes such as asteroid impacts and massive volcanic eruptions. A prediction that massive oil well fires in Kuwait would cause significant effects on climate was quite incorrect. In the 1990s... The idea of a global cooling as the result of global warming was already proposed. For a short period the idea of Global Dimming was in vogue.

You call it a myth AiA. Well sorry but it actually existed. You read too many alarmist sites they all call it a myth... they are liars in that it was a concern of some in scientific circles. It proved to be a misplaced concern, call that a myth if you like, but then be prepared for others to call the warming trend a myth too if it proves also to be a misplaced concern. Calling it a myth would also be wrong.

It is a myth created and popularized by the very popular media you quote.

There was no scientific consensus in the 1970s that the Earth was headed into an imminent ice age. Indeed, the possibility of anthropogenic warming dominated the peer-reviewed literature even then.

So begins an excellent review article in the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society (BAMS) by Thomas Peterson, William Connolley, and John Fleck. I had blogged on this when USA Today reported it but just realized I hadn’t blogged on the article itself.

The BAMS piece is easily the most thorough explanation and debunking of the issue I’ve seen in a scientific publication. Any progressive who is engaged in the climate change arena must be able to quickly and assuredly respond to this myth because it continues to live on thanks to the deniers’ and delayers’ clever strategy of ignoring the facts.

Heck even commenters on this blog keep defending the absurd line in Crichton’s novel State of Fear, when he has one of his fictional environmentalists say, “In the 1970′s all the climate scientists believed an ice age was coming.”

The BAMS piece examines the scientific origins of the myth, the popular media of the 1970s who got the story slightly wrong, the deniers/delayers who perpetuate the myth today, and, most importantly, what real scientists actually said in real peer-reviewed journals at the time. Their literature survey, the most comprehensive ever done on the subject, found:
The survey identified only 7 articles indicating cooling compared to 44 indicating warming. Those seven cooling articles garnered just 12% of the citations.

The authors put together this figure on “the number of papers classified as predicting, implying, or providing supporting evidence for future global cooling, warming, and neutral categories”:

The article ends with a powerful discussion of what the National Research Council concluded in its 1979 review of the science:
In July 1979 in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, Jule Charney, one of the pioneers of climate modeling, brought together a panel of experts under the U.S. National Research Council to sort out the state of the science. The panel’s work has become iconic as a foundation for the enterprise of climate change study that followed (Somerville et al. 2007). Such reports are a traditional approach within the United States for eliciting expert views on scientific questions of political and public policy importance (Weart 2003).

In this case, the panel concluded that the potential damage from greenhouse gases was real and should not be ignored. The potential for cooling, the threat of aerosols, or the possibility of an ice age shows up nowhere in the report. Warming from doubled CO2 of 1.5°–4.5°C was possible, the panel reported. While there were huge uncertainties, Verner Suomi, chairman of the National Research Council’s Climate Research Board, wrote in the report’s foreword that he believed there was enough evidence to support action: “A wait-and-see policy may mean waiting until it is too late” (Charney et al. 1979). Clearly, if a national report in the 1970s advocates urgent action to address global warming, then the scientific consensus of the 1970s was not global cooling.

Oh, and one more thing deniers — it ain’t cooling now either:

Yes, the planet has kept warming since 1998
Yes, the globe is warming. But how fast?
This just in: Great Ice Age of 2008 is STILL over
“Hadley Center to deniers: We are STILL warming”
Hansen throws cold water on cooling climate claim
Nature article on ‘cooling’ confuses media, deniers: Next decade may see rapid warming
Where is the media on the incredible warming and extreme weather of February?
Media enable denier spin 1: A (sort of) cold January doesn’t mean climate stopped warming
No warming since 1998? Get real, deniers!

It could be, except back then there were scientists advocating cooling and guess what... the trend was cooling.

BTW there is no concensus today. How many articles do you want me to post?

ps. I never said; “In the 1970′s all the climate scientists believed an ice age was coming.”
But there were enough to have it repeated time and again in the media.

Deny it all you like. I was there.

As for cooling now... how many graphs do you want me to post? Even scientists in the alarmist camp have admitted there has been no significant warming in the last 16 or so years and they are not sure why because according to the models and their theories there should be. If CO2 is the cause and CO2 is increasing then so should the temps. Yet it isn't happening. I've already posted graphs using hadcrut data that confirms this.

I can point to as many articles with a different opinion to those you post Hansen, Gore et al are making a fortune out of this, yet they have had their claims discredited and proven wrong many times. Time for you to look at other sites and get a balanced opinon.

Despite many claims to the contrary, the 1970's global cooling fears were widespread among many scientists and in the media. Despite the fact that there was no UN IPCC organization created to promote global cooling in the 1970s and despite the fact that there was nowhere near the tens of billions of dollars in funding spent today to promote man-made global warming, fears of a coming ice age, showed up in peer-reviewed literature, at scientific conferences, voiced by prominent scientists and throughout the media.

NASA warned of human caused coming 'ice age' in 1971 – Washington Times – September 19, 2007

Excerpt:
“The world "could be as little as 50 or 60 years away from a disastrous new ice age, a leading atmospheric scientist predicts,” read a July 9, 1971 Washington Post article. NASA scientist S.I. Rasool, a colleague of James Hansen, made the predictions. The 1971 article continues: "In the next 50 years" — or by 2021 — fossil-fuel dust injected by man into the atmosphere "could screen out so much sunlight that the average temperature could drop by six degrees," resulting in a buildup of "new glaciers that could eventually cover huge areas." If sustained over "several years, five to 10," or so Mr. Rasool estimated, "such a temperature decrease could be sufficient to trigger an ice age."

National Academy of Sciences Issued Report Warning of Coming Ice Age in 1975

Excerpt:
“A major climatic change would force economic and social adjustments on a worldwide scale,” warns a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences, “because the global patterns of food production and population that have evolved are implicitly dependent on the climate of the present century.” - Newsweek - April 28, 1975 “The Cooling World”

1977 book “The Weather Conspiracy: The Coming of the New Ice Age" - CIA Feared Global Cooling

Excerpt:
In the early 1970s, top CIA thinkers concluded that changing weather was “perhaps the greatest single challenge that America will face in coming years”. As a result they ordered several studies of the world's climate, the likely changes to come and their probably effect on America and the rest of the world. The studies conclude that the world is entering a difficult period during which major climate change (further cooling) is likely to occur. That is the consensus of the Central intelligence Agency, which highlights the fact that we are overdue for a new ice age. Many climatologists believe that since the 1960s, the world has been slipping towards a new ice age. ....the evidence suggests that change will be a return to a climate that was dominant from the seventeenth century to about 1850. Soviet weatherman Mikhail Budyko believes that 1 2.8F drop in the average global temperature would start glaciers on the march. If the temperature should fall by another 0.7F, it could usher in a ninety-thousand year tyranny if ice and snow.

1975 New York Times: "Climate Changes Called Ominous,", June 19, 1975 - Harold M. Schmeck, - p. 31.

Excerpt:
“The most drastic potential change considered in the new report is an abrupt end to the present interglacial period of relative warmth that governed the planet's climate for the past 10,000 years. [...] The report also noted that periods of benign climate comparable to the present are unusual and have existed for about 8 percent of the last 700,000 years.”
Climatologist Dr. Patrick Michaels, a prominent critic of the man-made global warming fears today, recalls how pervasive the coming ice age scare was when he was in graduate school.
"When I was going to graduate school, it was gospel that the Ice Age was about to start. I had trouble warming up to that one too. This (greenhouse) is not the first climate apocalypse, but it's certainly the loudest,” Michaels said.
The list goes on and on and on... Pity alarmists lie... it'd be easier to believe them if they didn't.

NOBODY KNOWS.

EVERYBODY is arguing about something.

Carry on.... knowing nothing about something you haven't a clue about.

Eventually, you, too, will return to the earth.

THEN you, too, will be NOTHING.

Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of Earth's atmosphere and oceans since the late 19th century and its projected continuation. Since the early 20th century, Earth's mean surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 °C (1.4 °F), with about two-thirds of the increase occurring since 1980. Warming of the climate system is unequivocal, and scientists are more than 90% certain that it is primarily caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations.

There is no argument really.

Scientists are 90% certain that it is produced by human activities.
