As a victim of child sexual abuse, I do not want to see this inquiry become some witch hunt against the Catholic church. Unfortunately some people seem determined to do that. All religious and secular institutions which harbored such a culture need to be exposed, punished and shamed - all of them. I know for a fact that it is occuring in non-Christian sectors and those bastards need to be equally accountable and targetted. If they're not then what's the point? Can we please keep the left/right political bullshit out of this and let the commissioners do their jobs before more children lose their innocence?

I think the obvious speaks for itself Boxy, when it's clear, a Gillard lead Royal Commission wants to denote more emphasis on the Catholic faith, for obvious reasons

The obvious reason is that this country has more Christian, and hence Catholic priests than all these other minority groups. It's pretty clear that the terms of reference do not limit it to the Catholic church, but any institution where there is evidence of a problem.

It's likely to concentrate fairly significantly on the Catholic church though, only because of the fact that most of the evidence points that way already.

Your concern was that Liberals own leader, being a Catholic might pose a few problems should they win the election, however what you may not be aware of is that if Labor wins, then the alternative is an even more old-school Catholic Bill Shorten, who has already openly snubbed the Royal Commission.

It seems to me that Abbott is more opened minded this and accommodating of a RC into child abuse, whereas Labors rising Bill Shorten star is not.

Anyway, it's the commissioners who will be handing down their report, not the PM (whoever it is).

Labor never really had any intentions of seeing this thing through ....it was a mere pre-electoral political stunt, given they have failed in a number of key policy areas so are trying to cash in on this.

I think Labor were desperately hoping Abbott would staunchly oppose it...instead, it was one of their own rising stars who has.

Victims of crime do not lose their innocence, it's their perpetrators who do.

I realise this topic might be difficult for some to remain objective when discussing the motives and practicalities of a Royal Commission into child abuse.

My concern is that the victims of such abuse are being needlessly violated all over again and for the wrong reasons.
I worry they may get their hopes up 'initially' this and back what they think is a thoughtful caring government only to find that the faceless men behind Labor were never truly supportive much less serious about a Royal Commission into child sex abuse to begin with, and only did so for political point scoring purposes in the lead-up to an election.

How would you feel if after the election you discovered they had no intentions of following through, this and only used victims of crime to meet their political objectives?

You would feel used and abused all over again, right?

And so you should.

It's bad form.
