You obviously earn more than $120,000 a year. I know people who earn around $100,000 with 3 kids who can , apparently, pay their $500 a week Mortgage out of the extras the Government gives them without the wife having to work ...... or maybe I am young and naive.

He has pressure from his own party as well as most businesses and the Business Council of Australia to get rid of the unfair dismissal laws and decrease wages. This is Liberal policy and only the idiots would believe that Workchoices under another name won't be re-introduced.

Means testing starts in at around $112,000 from memory. Abbott will abolish means testing. As far as middle class welfare goes - there's the baby bonus, first home buyers grant, private health insurance rebate, childcare and the medicare dental scheme until Labor recently abolished it. There is also the medicare rebate scheme which allowed liposuction and cosmetic surgery to be claimed in full as long as it was performed in specialist rooms.

People survived without all this extra cash prior to Howard's pork barrelling. Now our welfare bill almost equals our tax revenue. Labor have at least cut back on single parent welfare and introduced means testing.

YOU don't need to be a professor of economics to know John Howard was more fiscally prudent than Silvio Berlusconi. And if an econometric study suggested the opposite, you would look very carefully at its data and methods before placing much weight on its results. Unless, that is, you were the Fairfax press and the ABC. or mantra or Arsie et al.

That the ABC wouldn't bother to do so may come as no surprise. But one expects better of The Age's Peter Martin, who is a decent person and a respected professional. However, that didn't stop Martin beating up the claim that an International Monetary Fund staff working paper found Howard to be fiscally imprudent while exonerating the Whitlam government of any such charge.
