Former Greens leader Bob Brown will spearhead Sea Shepherd Society's next anti-whaling protest in the Southern Ocean.
Legal action has forced the Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson to resign as president of the US chapter after more than three decades at the helm.
Mr Brown will take on the role of directing the organisation's fight against Japanese whalers.
The move was announced in Hobart this morning where the organisation's fourth vessel, the Sam Simon, has been delayed by forecast storm-force winds.
Watson is in the Southern Ocean, waiting for the Japanese whaling fleet to start their annual whale hunt.
He has also resigned as the society's Australian president.
Director Jeff Hansen says it is a response to a US court ruling that personally named Watson and limited the anti-whaling activities.
"It shows the calibre of Paul's selflessness," he said.
Last month, an appeals court in the United States issued an injunction, ordering the anti-whaling protesters to stay at least 450 metres from the Japanese fleet.
The injunction followed court action by the Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research which conducts whaling in the Southern Ocean.
The institute said it was part of a strategy to stop Sea Shepherd.
Mr Brown says it is an honour to head the campaign.
The Sam Simon is expected to leave Hobart in the next day few days.

Is Bobby up to the task to take over from Paul Watson? Whilst his principles and ideals might be honourable I doubt he has the balls to really put himself on the line like Watson has done.
Time will tell

Good old Bobby. He looks healthy and happy and is more at home fighting a cause than pandering to a political party. When he retired from politics there was some speculation about his health, but doing battle with the Japanese whalers has given him a new lease on life. He's a new man.

He was lucky to have trained as a Medico and understood the need to use condoms. Anal sex is not natural.
Now that your Bobby has gone from politics, will you still vote Green with that female idjit in charge?

It obviously is natural to a fair proportion of the male population.

It's a storm in a teacup and something for the rabid right to grasp hold of. Pathetic. Of course Eric Nazi Abetz leads the way in vilifying a comment that was taken out of all proportion. The right whingers are the only ones yelping about it.

Perhaps you can ask Christine Milne which laws we are all allowed to break? Would bombing the Greens head office be ok?
Just which laws do the Greens deem fit to be ignored?
How about sinking the Sea Shepherd with Bob on board?

All Milne said was
"Moylan's hoax was part of a long and proud history of civil disobedience, potentially breaking the law, to highlight something wrong''.
It could be taken any way at all. Lee Rhiannon's comment was of course controversial, but not illegal. We still have free speech in this country.
Rhiannon wrote:'Congrats to Jonathan Moylan, Frontline Action on Coal, for exposing ANZ investment in coalmines.''

The Greens are generally a very honest party. Lee Rhiannon has her own agenda, but unlike the two big parties, the Greens don't gag their senators.
How about this despicable comment from Abbott? Is this OK because Abbott does volunteer work?
Lance Corporal Jared MacKinney was shot dead in a battle with Taliban insurgents in August.
Channel Seven has broadcast footage of Mr Abbott in October discussing the incident with US commander James Creighton.
Mr Abbott, in Tarin Kowt, is seen saying: "It's pretty obvious that, well, sometimes shit happens, doesn't it?"
