http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142 ... 24142.htmlSYDNEY—Already the best-paid elected leader of a Group of 20 nation, Australia's Labor Prime Minister Julia Gillard just got richer.
With her second raise in three months—an increase of 14,430 Australian dollars (US$14,827)—Ms. Gillard's annual salary stands at A$495,430, beating U.S. President Barack Obama's pay by 25%, more than doubling what U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron pulls down and significantly exceeding the wages of the leaders of Germany, France and Canada.
Ms. Gillard's office won't say whether she will accept the raise, the result of a pay review carried out for all Australian politicians and approved on Wednesday.
I guess she thinks she's worth it.

Oh but wait...
She's been accused of under-paying her sisterhood.

Re: We're overpaying our pollies...
It has been long argued that we should pay our leaders something like what a CEO of a large company gets. $500k is not too much if that is the measure.
An ex-US president has a job for life and perks to boot plus what else they can get into.
I don't see why the top jobs aren't paid a fair going rate. However they should be performance managed. Like a CEO... now that would create a real issue if they were trually accountable... which they are not. (not the way a CEO is)

That is the issue. . The very nature of their appointment and dismissal (by party or a new election) is not performance based but political based.freediver wrote:How?However they should be performance managed.
Maybe they could be messured by some terms of reference that can be managed as part of their manifesto and 50% of their salary be linked to this performance. In the west, ecconomic performance is important. maybe debt reduction commitments ..etc depending on where we are in the cycle.
If you have a high salary, you should have some of it at risk based on your performance. A contract at the start of their term would be a start and be under review at the appropriate points or at key milestones or events.
However, this may have a down side. The should be there to do what is right for the country and maybe should not be driven to targets that feather their own nest.
Let's make it simple. The manifesto the were elected on should be converted into measurable commitments and they are paid the bonus on fulfilly these commitments.... how's that. If circumstances change, they need to seek a change in their commitments through a process that is independant.

CEO's over the past few years have been rewarded millions of dollars for poor performances. Gillard is only a mere mortal - the same as the rest of them, although leaders/treasurers of political parties should come with excellent references and qualifications in fiscal management. Most politicians wouldn't be employable in private industry as financial controllers or CEO's with their inexperience in the day to day running of an organisation, but they are only figureheads. Obviously the UN/World bank run the planet and PM's are only branch managers.Super Nova wrote: I don't see why the top jobs aren't paid a fair going rate. However they should be performance managed. Even branch managers are on performance based incentives.mantra wrote: Obviously the UN/World bank run the planet and PM's are only branch managers.
