Push to Ban Sharks

Post by harvey » Fri Dec 28, 2012 1:45 pm

Another shark attack so can expect the usual calls to hunt and kill THE shark that had the audacity to attack a human, and wouldn't be surprised if they also called for the banning (culling) of all sharks from all the oceans.

"Shark attack at Diamond Head near Port Macquarie in NSW

A 29-year-old man was attacked by a shark at Kylie's Beach, Diamond Head, around 10:45 this morning. "

Sharks are instiktively scared of banded sea snakes.
Meant to have a black & white striped wetsuit made years ago.
Some one beat me to it .. but it works all the same.

Do you suppose sharks will re-think their diet, this and stop eating people because we manage to hunt the odd one down and kill it for retribution ....(assuming that it's even the actual shark that ate the person) rendering it an example of how not to behave for other would be murderous sharks who might contemplate an entrée of surfboard with a side order of human carcase?

8-) Idiots!

Leave the sharks alone, it's humans who need to rethink their behaviours this and stop placing themselves in harms way.
Once you are out in the ocean, outside the flags... you should consider yourself fair game.
And if a shark happens to be bigger and hungrier than you...then bad luck.

So sharks don't swim between the flags?

Sharks do learn. All fish do. Some are just a bit slower than others.

Either way, it's the risk you take if you want to swim in sharks natural habitat, the sea.

Dont like it, then go to a public swimming pool instead.

No sharks there.

Does it work, though?

Sharks are visual hunters surely. But they hunt from below. a striped wetsuit surely won't make any difference to your sillhuotte when seen from below.

Edit: even these photos are misleading because the shark won't see colour.

Only great whites do that as far as I know, and only when they are in seal hunting mode. Most sharks will check you out then have a tentative taste, or not.

I assumed it was the the great whites in hunting mode that you would most want to deter with the striped wetsuit...
