Wog girl, what do you think are the triggers that have caused this significant decline in Australian educational results in such a short period of time?

Wrap up our little princes and princesses, else they may toughen up to what life is all about.

But what has this to do with more than 20% of Australian year 8 maths and Science teachers not being as confident as they should be teaching?

Great idea, lets blame the parents and ignore the declining standard of education and teaching in this country.

Afterall... it costs much less blaming the parents, than it would actually doing something meaningful to make a difference.

Remember, teachers are concerned themselves.

We should be listening to them, this and addressing their workplace concerns, not blaming the kids parents.

Such a steep decline seems frightening but I remember statistics placing our well below 6th place in 2010. Our school has implemented numerous literacy and numeracy strategies which has seen us improve significantly, and continue to improve each year. Parental involvement has played a key role in it.

The decline of traditional teaching methods and the adoption of some idiot academic idea that decided to turn hundreds of years of educational history on its head and introduce outcomes based education and basically have ruined the lives of a couple of generations of kids

Decline in the number of trade schools and that of apprenticeship government incentives doesn't help. The increase/encouragement in TAFE courses for anything.
Why go and slog it out at university when (TAFE) diplomas are being pushed as being equivalent to a degree.

Wait a minute, PISA have ranked us ninth not 42nd but, yes, we were sixth in 2010. My mistake. China are first because, on average, their students spend about 15 hours per week on their studies outside of school. Doubt Aussie kids devote that much time.

I think we are all pretty satisfied that second stat is from the OECD report, but what was not made clear is that the 2010 stats are also from the OECD, so there is no getting around the fact that there has been a significantly steep decline in quality of education.

Also, I wasn't really asking about your personal experience at the school where you work, rather, I was interested in your professional opinion given that you have access to a wealth of knowledge on education and education policy, and given that you are tertiary educated and therefore able to provide a educated opinion on why we are failing to educate our students to a standard comparable to other English speaking countries.

Most likely, PISA are using different measures to the OECD.

So you do not think that it has anything to do with the quality of teaching staff or teaching techquies wog girl? Rather it is the students not spending enough time on their studies? If time is the issue, do you think we should increase school hours?
