So you believe the news story about sexual abuse in Jewish schools is false? If this is the case why hasn't the newspaper apologised and retracted it?

Certainly if sexual abuse was rampant in government schools - there would be public outrage.

It's six metres high, stretches up to 20km and is creating a stir on Sydney's leafy north shore.

For five years, members of St Ives' Orthodox Jewish community have applied - and failed - to seek permission to build an eruv - or symbolic barrier - around a vast tract of the suburb.

Now the matter has landed in the NSW Land and Environment Court for a ruling.

An eruv is basically a thin wire hanging between a series of dark green poles and existing telegraph poles, creating a bounded area where people observing the Jewish faith can carry out activities and still comply with their religious custom.

Under Jewish religious law, you are only allowed to carry or push objects on the Sabbath or Jewish holy days if you are within a special area, or eruv.

"It's a virtual area, which enables young Jewish mothers, elderly Jewish people to get out and about on the Jewish festivals," says Vic Alhadeff, chief executive officer of the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies.

About 3000 people observe the Jewish faith in St Ives - about 13 per cent of the local population - but only a small group observe the Orthodox elements of the faith.

The plan has angered many locals who fear the structure will be unsightly, disrupt a push to have poles and cables placed below ground, and will upset the existing social harmony by creating a "religious enclave".

The first Sydney Eruv was established in Sydney's eastern suburbs in 2002, and includes the Bondi Beach promenade.

A second eruv, known as the Southern Eruv is currently being completed in Randwick and Maroubra.

On a serious note, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, I just think school funding should be distributed more evenly.

This and I cant understand why Jews are so paranoid and feel they need more security than our non-Jewish Australian schools.

It seems, the more wealthy the school the more government funding and security.

Two things need to change before literacy and numeracy rates improves. First, parents - get off your bums and preach the importance of homework to your kids. I'm sick of devoting so much time to helping kids with their numeracy only for them to never do their homework and the parents won't do a damn thing except complain about how horrible teachers are when we give their kids detentions for not doing said homework. Second, kids need to stop thinking that they don't need school because they think some idiot in the mining industry will pay them $200, 000 per year to dig holes and, if that fails, the dole will support their expensive lifestyles. We're raising generation after generation of spoilt brats with silver spoons in their mouths who place video games and ipods ahead of education. Private schools merely spoon feed their students and set them up for a miserable time at university because they don't know how to think for themselves.

Thats all very good and well, though why is it that more than 20% of year 8 secondary teachers don't feel as confident as they should teaching maths and science?

If the teachers arent confident, then how is it we can expect their students will be?
