Some 30,000 people are killed each year by firearms in the United States; one-third or more US households own guns.

Introducing a gun buy-back scheme may prove to be quite expensive, and pointless given the gun-entitled mind set of Americans.

Exchanging guns for food vouchers wont cut the mustard either, for many Americans would rather go without food than go without their gun.

It's a hard one, to disarm a nation of gun-lovers wont be easy, given they are quite paranoid about being invaded by other nations and even their own.

In Australia in order to pass new gun legislation you need the approval of both major party's, however in America, you only need the autonomous approval of one.

Basically, what this means is that even if the Democrats managed to introduce unpopular new gun legislation, the Republicans would only wind it back as soon as they got in power anyway, so, what would be the point?

Sadly, I don't think there's a solution to this problem, not for the long term anyway.

30,000 Americans will continue being killed by firearms each year, inevitably, some of them will be children.

Being a small country this seems the only practical solution - having trained and armed citizens tied to the military. They obviously want to live in peace with a little protection. Local crime would be stopped quickly before it got out of control.

Clark Air Base was arguably the most urbanized military facility in history, and was the largest American base overseas. At its peak around 1990, it had a permanent population of 15,000. It had a base exchange, a large commissary, a small shopping arcade, a branch department store, cafeterias, teen centers, a hotel, miniature golf, riding stables, and other concessions.
Perhaps this is what is planned for the expanding military camps in Darwin?

I doubt it mantra... we already speak English, watch many US TV shows and movies and listen to their music.
I doubt many Australians would be influenced this way at all.

When did you last spend any time in Darwin? It is still quite primitive in many ways. Not only is there a large aboriginal population, there are plenty of asylum seekers, transients and Americans. I would think the NT is one of the more vulnerable states in Australia.

Well America does have a throw away population, but I don't believe for a poofteenth of a nano-second that Americans kill 10% of their population annually. '30,000 people shot and killed each year?' .. What a load of cumquat.

Its how I obtained many illegal weapons. Most of those who had such weapons unregistered sold them on the black market rather than let Big Brother decide what each one is worth and who's elligible for compensation.

Well I'd trade an M1 carbine for a McDonald's voucher any day because M1 ammo only fits M1s and is unavailable. But I wouldn't trade a functioning rifle of virtually any calibre for a one off meal ticket no matter how desperate I was.
The voucher can feed once only, where as a rifle with ammo could feed until the ammo runs out.

This is clearly an imaginary number picked from thin air by those who are scared of guns because they know nothing about them.

Sometimes when hunting, gun shots attract feral dogs looking for offal/scraps, because they've learnt to associate gun shots with free dinner. Turns out according to rumour that in America gun shots attract bears. So now it's not uncommon for a deer hunter to be mauled while skinning his kill.

I've never been to Darwin but I'm aware a blind eye is turned to the weapons on boats in Darwin because of Indonesian pirates.

Took a bloke from NT pig hunting a couple of months ago. He didn't catch any pigs, but he did catch >

Can't vouch for the accuracy of this as it is The Guardian but it can't be that far out.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/datablog ... world-list" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
With less than 5% of the world's population, the United States is home to roughly 35–50 per cent of the world's civilian-owned guns, heavily skewing the global geography of firearms and any relative comparison.

Oops, scrap that 10% bit, math never was my forte.
But then with a pop of 300 million, 30K works out at 0.1%.

Oz's murder rate hasn't changed in over 100 years. Ozzies kill roughly 200 other Ozzies every year.
So out of 22 million, not much different from U$A. Except most of our murders are done with kitchen knives, claw hammers, rat poison, broken bottles, fence palings, shifting spanners ect ect.
