Are we becoming too precious?

Post by mellie » Thu Dec 13, 2012 8:27 am

Australians have always had a keen sense of humour, are world renowned for being able to laugh at themselves and turn the other cheek. Even our politicians were once considered "fair game" and weren't off limits when it came to our journalists colourful witty remarks.

Take the late Matt Price for instance when he wrote the following, and how even Gillard seemingly had a sense of humour back in 2002 when she responded with the following...
With her broad Australian accent, Ms Gillard fondly recalled the first time Price turned his attention on her.

"My first real contact with Matt was in 2002 ... when he wrote that I combined the cheese-grater voice of a Footscray fishwife with the multi-shaded hair of a Toorak trendoid," said Ms Gillard, who represents the Melbourne seat of Lalor.

"I immediately leapt on the phone to find out what had happened to journalistic standards in this country.

"'That's the cheese-grater voice of an Altona fishwife and the multi-shaded hair of a Fitzroy trendoid,' I declared to him. 'Get it right, Matt'."

Would Gillard respond the same way now?

Or would she call him a misogynous sexist pig then demand a public apology?

Whats happening to us Australia, why are we loosing our grip, our sense of what makes us uniquely us, this and are finding it harder and harder to take a joke, laugh at ourselves and each other?

Has it become too politically incorrect to celebrate what I believe to be our own unique Australian culture?

What made Cracker special is that it wasn't for the 'precious' or the faint hearted, I'd really like to capture some of this here on PA and work towards re-instilling what made Australians and their politics unique.

But I'm going to need some help, this and a little bit of rope.

Not enough to hang myself, or this board, but enough to get the right balance.

8-)

Cracker could be a deliciously dark and witty place at times, there were no holes barred and we had some great contributors. Even our cruciverbalist crossword compilers would have their say... compilers such as Noel Jessop, Stickler, DH, DA...

I miss those guys.

Even their cryptic crosswords were comical and witty.

I worry that we are losing our sense of 'Cracker'.. 8-)
