ALP industrial espionage and extortion runs deep and wide
The Labor member for Fowler in western Sydney yesterday declined to comment on allegations, which are contained in the diary of Ian Cambridge, the Australian Workers Union joint national secretary who in the 90s was trying to root out corruption in the union.
But another union official who became a Labor senator, Michael Forshaw, rejected as “absolute rubbish” any suggestion contained in the diary that he was involved in the meetings with the oil and gas producer Woodside Petroleum.
The diary of Mr Cambridge has been obtained by The Australian. Mr Cambridge, now a commissioner for Fair Work Australia, has confirmed that the diary is an accurate reflection of what he was told during a tumultuous period in which he and AWU president Bill Ludwig led a crackdown on fraud perpetrated by Julia Gillard’s then boyfriend, Bruce Wilson. The Prime Minister has admitted setting up an association for Mr Wilson, which the then AWU state secretary and his bagman Ralph Blewitt later used to defraud hundreds of thousands of dollars by soliciting payments from companies…
Ms Gillard later described the AWU Workplace Reform Association as a “slush fund” for the re-election of union officials. She has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, saying she knew nothing of the operations of the fund.
The diary discloses that on August 15, 1995, Mr Cambridge met Mr Wilson in Melbourne ...
“During the course of the evening discussion emerged regarding some of the moneys in the funds in Victoria and at one point Wilson indicated that we were in the same restaurant which is Cerabonas in which discussions regarding the payments by Woodside in respect to one of these employer ‘donations’ was concluded and that involved discussions with himself, then secretary Michael Forshaw, assistant secretary Chris Hayes and two representatives from Woodside who he named, but I cannot remember their names,” the diary says…
Mr Forshaw, who was a high-ranking official of the AWU and then a Labor senator for NSW from 1994 until his retirement last year, strenuously denied the account attributed to Mr Wilson in the diary, including that he and Mr Hayes were present at such a meeting.

Re: Reasons not to vote LABOR.
POLICE from the West Australian fraud squad have contacted a confessed union fraudster and are considering reopening their 1996 investigation into the Australian Workers Union fraud.
Ralph Blewitt's lawyers were contacted yesterday by a fraud squad officer to seek his co-operation and a visit to Perth.
Mr Blewitt flew to Australia from Malaysia this week, saying he wanted to co-operate with police in Victoria and in Perth over a fraud that revolved around a slush fund called the Australian Workers Union Workplace Reform Association.
Julia Gillard helped set up the association in 1992 when she was a salaried partner at the law firm Slater & Gordon and the solicitor acting for the AWU, her union official boyfriend Bruce Wilson and Mr Blewitt.
The association, which the Prime Minister later described as a "slush fund" for the re-election of union officials, was used to siphon about $400,000 from building company Thiess with bogus invoices issued by Mr Blewitt and Mr Wilson for work that never occurred.
About $100,000 of this money was funnelled into the purchase of a house in Melbourne, bought in Mr Blewitt's name for Mr Wilson's use as a Victorian-based union official. Ms Gillard attended the auction.
She has repeatedly and strenuously denied wrongdoing, and said she was not aware of the workings of the association.
Mr Blewitt told The Australian in August that he was involved in sham transactions and fraud, and he has pledged to assist authorities in return for an assurance that he would not be prosecuted.
A spokesman for Mr Blewitt said last night that his solicitor, Bob Galbally of Melbourne firm Galbally Rolfe, was contacted by the West Australian fraud squad yesterday. "Ralph is prepared to co-operate with any reopening of the investigation," he said.
Mr Blewitt arrived in Melbourne on Wednesday for a meeting with his legal advisers, pending a conference with Victorian police today.
Police investigative files obtained under Freedom of Information laws reveal that West Australian police regarded Mr Wilson and Mr Blewitt as "crooks" who had fraudulently used the slush fund to obtain significant sums of money from Thiess, which was then running a major project with AWU labour, the Dawesville Cut.
The original investigation did not probe the purchase of the house in Melbourne's Fitzroy with money that was taken out of the slush fund and sent to Slater & Gordon.
The investigation did not have the co-operation of Mr Blewitt or Mr Wilson. And police were frustrated that Thiess did not want to make a formal complaint about having handed over the money for a service that was never provided.
The renewed police interest in the fraud came as former Slater & Gordon lawyer Nick Styant-Browne appeared on ABC's 7.30 program to raise new questions about Ms Gillard's knowledge of a mortgage relating to the Melbourne house and Labor caucus members said concerns were rising within the government about the impact of the scandal before the final sitting week of parliament.
Julie Bishop has flagged that she will continue to question the Prime Minister on the issue.
One senior Labor MP said there was a view that the Prime Minister had to answer some of the questions about the issue in question time next week.
"There is growing concern -- keeping your head down and saying nothing is not going to work," the MP, who is a critic of the Prime Minister, said.
The MP said Ms Gillard already had a problem with the electorate and "hiding behind her press conference" was not going to work.
Some MPs were talking about the need to have an honest broker or party elder discuss the issue with Ms Gillard to determine if it represented a problem for the Australian Labor Party.
Parliament was the best place to make a statement because it involved a higher obligation not to mislead.
Another MP said the issue was not going away and that some MPs were angry about the creation of union slush funds.
The concerns mounted as senior ministers including Environment Minister Tony Burke, Foreign Minister Bob Carr and Wayne Swan declared that the Prime Minister had dealt with the AWU issues at her August 23 press conference.
Workplace Relations Minister Bill Shorten, who told ABC's Lateline on Wednesday night that the association Ms Gillard helped to set up was "unauthorised"' and "inappropriate", said yesterday the Prime Minister had no more questions to answer.
Mr Shorten said Ms Gillard had extensively answered issues to do with her time as a lawyer with Slater & Gordon and those matters had been recycled periodically. "She has never had any specific allegation of illegality at all," Mr Shorten said.
