Don't certain countries demand that they get live stock? The Muslims need to actually kill an animal as part of some celebration. The Jews like to do something with their meat as well. Don't they?
This latest problem is not so much a food processing one where animals are mistreated during the process. This is about Pakistan claiming they were diseased then killing them all in a disorganised barbaric fashion. When we transport animals to places like this we lose control of them. There has to be better safeguards in place and organisation if this trade is to gain public support.

We could of course kill the animals here and send refrigerated carcasses etc. NZ has phased out the trade successfully.
Something we agree on. It's obvious that no matter what "safeguards" are put in place - our livestock is subject to the most cruel and inhumane treatment overseas.

We put a stop to it many years ago. I thought it was revived under the Coalition, but it could have been under a Labor government. There was a good reason why this trade was stopped at one time. We are supposed to be a first world country, yet we sell cheap live animals to third world countries. Do we really need this trade?

NZ is phasing it out. Do the US and the UK export live animals aside from those used for breeding purposes?

People eat meat.

Some religions demand that the meat is "freshly killed" others need it to be "hung" or whatever.

IF you want Australian Farmers to give up their farms because they can't export their "live stock" good luck with that. It is their livelihood. They know nothing else. Seriously. If Aussie farmers can't, American (or Brazilian?) farmers will. It is not a Greenie issue. It is a religious issue. 8-)

Farmers who have sheep for WOOL are more or less stuffed as well, anyway. What else does Australia do out there? Start Casinos in the Outback? Those guys have to earn a crust, one way or the other or they will go mad!

How did the graziers earn a crust when we didn't export live animals?

Perhaps if they only supplied meat nationally - we might have better quality meat available. With the cost of the feed and shipping overseas - graziers only make their money on the volume of animals they export. We're not selling inanimate gadgets that can be packed like sardines in crates and spend days, sometimes weeks at sea - we're talking about live creatures which are subject to barbaric treatment and horrific slaughter.

Stop thinking of graziers as RICH PEOPLE for a start. They are hard workers and it can't be a good life, stuck out there in no-mans-land.

Are you a Vegie?

I have been, more-or-less for the last 6 months to prove a point about my cholesterol level. No cream or dairy products, no red meat, just Inghams "chicken breasts" and some Atlantic salmon or whatever. Lots of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. LOL

When was this live export ban, Manty? I don't remember it.

I'd like to know what the hell went on with that disease scare, to make the shipment divert to Pakistan, and then lead to the cock up :x

The trade was stopped during the Hawke era. It resumed under the Coalition or towards the end of Keating's reign. I can't find any reference. Someone else might know the era when we ceased these exports.

It's unbearable even quoting some of the cruel aspects of the trade - but those who encourage it are as primitive as the arabs and asians who mistreat the animals before slaughter.

You're hallucinating as usual. Where did I infer that graziers were rich?
