I think Team Gillard and Team Abbott are as bad as each other. Parliament is the circus in which the two teams express their incompetence whilst leveling insults at each other.

I won't be voting this time around... Unless Turnbull gets a look see again.

A failing Prime Minister propped up by sound bites

As a woman who entered the political arena to make a difference, established a small business through hard work and individual enterprise, and continues to mentor my sons in dealing with life’s opportunities and challenges through the prism of respect and dignity, the Prime Minister’s behaviour in the last week has served as a lesson to all as to how not to conduct oneself in public life. tick.

Check, check… Is this microphone on? Right then, down to business. Tony Abbott is a misogynist etc etc.

Prime Minister Gillard’s efforts to foment public brawling and marshal the forces of the ‘sisterhood’ have set back the cause of women for a generation. Next lot of polling re men and women should be interesting.

Double standards have been on display all week whilst the ‘handbag hit squad’ has decried any criticism of the Prime Minister on the basis of sexism, in an attempt to silence any scrutiny on the sheer incompetence of this Government. Even references to “she” are now defined as misogynistic, with a sympathetic Speaker in Anna Burke, the Member for Chisholm, demanding that interjections to any women should be withdrawn. Which is just so true.

Parliament this week turned into a farcical theatre that would make even Germaine Greer blush.

It is important to remember that the move by the ‘sisterhood’ to deflect any criticism is not derived out of any concern that women are being targeted for their chromosome composition, but rather to unite women and get behind an embattled and failing Prime Minister.

I am reminded of the campaign that was rolled out by the ALP at the last election with the face of Julia Gillard on all corflutes and the local candidate nowhere to be seen. In Victoria, it was a campaign to elect the first Australian female Prime Minister, not a campaign setting out the policy agenda of a Labor Government.

If nothing else, the last week has given us a heads up about the nature of the next election campaign. Labor’s agenda is not about good governance, integrity or, heaven forbid, what’s in the best interests of all Australians. Labor only seeks to prop up a failing Prime Minister through sensationalist sound bites.

The battle lines are being drawn. The politics of the last week has exposed the fact that even the Labor faithful have given up all pretense that they can win the next election based on their track record and their ability to convince the voters that they can lift their game and deliver good policy and governance.

As a woman preselected and elected to the Senate on the basis of merit, not according to a party-instituted quota system, I prevail on all men and women to look beyond the daily headlines and demand responsible government that will provide hope, reward and opportunity into the future.
