Prime Minister Julia Gillard says she is shocked by the death of her father John and will return home from the APEC talks in Russia as soon as possible to grieve with her family.

I heard he carked it because of shame and embarrassment in fathering the worst PM in history...that would be a heavy strain on anyone. Poor bastard would have copped abuse daily

Still, he's probably glad that he checked out knowing that she didn't manage to push out any demon spawn

It is good that one Lefty died and he can’t wait until Julia and her mother dies too.

Well, he was 93. Sad to lose a parent though at any age.

This bit from the ABC made me smile ... "John Gillard moved to Australia from Wales in 1966, along with his wife Moira and Ms Gillard, who was a toddler at the time." In 1966, Julia turned 5 (she was born on 29 September 1961), so a bit tall to be a toddler, unless she was backward.

Looks like the bloody ABC got it wrong, it definitely said 93 when I first read it.

Just checked and they have "updated" it to 83.

I read it first on ABC and it said 93. Then I went to the News site and it said 83, so I went back to the ABC and it still said 93. I checked again after you mentioned it and the ABC had changed it. So there! Doesn't matter anyhow but I do NOT tell lies, even though you obviously do.
