Re: Labor to sell off the farm
Large chunks of Australian land are bought up by establishing Australian shelf companies, trusts and using delayed settlements to hide who the real purchaser is. True ownership can easily be hidden behind complex trusts and company structures.
Also, nothing to stop foreign investors acquiring dozens of smaller farms over a year, which don't trigger a review. Under current legislation, only purchases of agricultural land over $244 million trigger a review. Nothing at all to stop them from making 10 different purchases of around $25 million each. It's a farce
Hassad Australian, a company wholly owned by the Arab state of Qatar, presently owns 7300sq km of Australian land, two-thirds of the entire size of Qatar.
Besides farmland, restrictions should also be placed on residential purchases. It's totally ridiculous that foreign investors can push up the price of the local market and never live here.

Do you have a contribution at all Aussie?
Let me guess. Unless it is throwing your hefty bulk around and antagonising posters, I would guess not
I think I will laugh so much I will need to be hospitalised if you run for Admin

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-09-05/e ... ection=qld" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Former Treasury boss Ken Henry has delivered a strong defence of foreign investment in Australia, arguing the current public debate has been "frequently misinformed" and skewed by "populist instincts".
"It is perhaps inevitable that people would be concerned about Chinese investment, especially because it's occurred so recently and because it's grown so rapidly."
The most recent debate about foreign investment has been sparked by the proposed sale of Australia's largest cotton farm to a consortium of Chinese and Japanese investors.
Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce has described the decision as a "farce" and questioned how it is in the national interest to sell the 93,000-hectare Cubbie Station in southern Queensland.
Asked whether he thought there needed to be any change in how the Foreign Investment Review Board considers proposals, Dr Henry said defining the national interest was always going to be difficult and would change depending on the circumstances.
"Writing out a formula to guide foreign investment decision-making in respect of what is or is not contrary to the national interest is, I think, simply impossible," he said.

Re Aussie, I took that as a given. As far as I recall, nobody has been permanently banned from this site. Post somebody's personal details and you will be banned but having a different opinion won't get it (unless Aussie is Admin).
With a PA Forum Election in the wind you will find lots of people turning up to discuss "personalities" and little Politics. Bear with it.
But I can't see the point of him/her and JM posting stuff re personalities etc on a topic which has nothing to do with it, especially when there is a topic already there to deal with the issue.
meanwhile back to topic.
Wayne Swan has just said he set up the parameters for the sale of Cubbie. I can't tell you how much that fills me with confidence. Honestly... I can't.
