Business services are starting to be introduced:

NBN Co is now promising minimum fault-repair times for small, medium and large businesses, and will activate its first business-specific network service today.

A single premises can request up to 50 voice services, on a fibre connection, for $330 per month, which is less than it would cost to get multiple telephone lines on a copper network, people in the industry say. [My emphasis.]

''NBN for Business'' is available through internet providers, because NBN Co is not allowed to sell directly to businesses or households.

The service includes a one-hour response time for faults and a promise to restore an internet and phone connection within 12 hours in urban areas, 1½ days in regional areas and 2½ days in remote areas. NBN support staff will be available for five more hours a day for business customers than household customers.

Small- and medium-sized businesses are expected to be the biggest beneficiaries because large enterprises are likely to already have high-capacity and high-speed networks.

NBN Co's head of product development and sales, Jim Hassell, said businesses depended on reliable telephone and internet connections and needed minimum service level agreements. ''All of the products up to now have been focused on the consumer market,'' he said.

NBN Co charges the same access prices for business customers as households, but it will charge for additional services.

Wow. NBN can deliver the same service as copper and subsidised by the government can deliver it for a few pennys less. Great investment case.

It's only useful if they deliver an improved technology with the service. Video phones ...etc. If it's just a telephone.... big fucking deal.

You want video phones? HiDef, proper lip synch video phones I presume? The NBN, FTTH, can deliver that because of its high upload as well as download bandwidth. More than video calls it can deliver telepresence!

At one stage my business had six lines and $1800/quarter telephone bills, 6 x $30 x 3 = $540/quarter just in line rental! Hardly a fe pennies!

By the time the rollout is finished the NBN will be all but obsolete.
In 20 years they will have to dig it all up and set up the new technology or replace the fibre.
Emedicine as portrayed by Labor is science-fiction and fraught with problems.
Where will the peripheral devices come from and how much will they cost house-holders?
What Doctor will accept a diagnoses online without first having a personal proper check-up or risk being sued.
how much will insurance companies charge doctors for using such technology if and when available.
As for your idea of everyday use... give me a break.
The immediate use will be good mostly, for Movie theft and gamers.

SN had been crapping on about the NBN crap bad this way or that way etc, so now he has effectively agreed the NBN will be great.

Naffie Naffie Naffie you are about the 5 millionth ignorant wanker to crap on about better technology than the NBN! Fibre conducts light (EM radiation) much faster than wireless can do. It can offer huge bandwidth!

The next thing in computing will be quantum computers. 20 years is probably about right for that technology to become mature: superior, reliable and widely adopted. But to connect two quantum computers you need a waveform and fibre is a great waveform! Any variety of wireless will have too much latency to be used with quantum computing.
