Re: Identity by IP address fraught with inaccuracy.
Despite what some people tell you (including those selling stuff to dumbos to "hide" your IP), your IP address will NOT lead others on the internet to your "front door", or anywhere within cooee of it. Talk about paranoid.
All the IP tells you is which ISP you use and very approximately where you are.
Sometimes my IP address puts me in Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. I am in Canberra as everybody knows. "Canberra" (also known as the ACT) covers a lot of hectares, including Namadji National Park ...... 235,800 hectares to be exact.. I dare you to find me via my IP addy.

What Mantra, Orchid and Neferti are saying about IP addresses/numbers is all true.Black Orchid wrote:Anyone using the same ISP can have the same recycled IP as that of another person using the same ISP. Anyone using the same ISP can have very similar numbers

What one needs to know, Annie, is WHY Aussie is so interested in IPs.annielaurie wrote:What Mantra, Orchid and Neferti are saying about IP addresses/numbers is all true.Black Orchid wrote:Anyone using the same ISP can have the same recycled IP as that of another person using the same ISP. Well I've wondered about that too. An admin (or other person with access) can't actually locate the user by IP address alone.Neferti~ wrote:What one needs to know, Annie, is WHY Aussie is so interested in IPs.
The IP info can track to the location of the user's provider (ISP) but not the user himself. The user is still anonymous and it would be very hard to find that person without other personal info to go on.
Millions of users are signed onto the same provider, and with dynamic (recycling) IP numbers every time users log onto the internet, the odds are in favor of people having the same IP sometimes. Works that way up here in the USA too.
Then again, if some folks on a small forum like this are going to use proxy servers, then there is a chance that more than one member could show up with the same IP number from time to time.
I hope I've explained that right!

No you haven't. Also, you have not told me about the error in what I had posted. I guess you'll get around to that.

Ask you what, Aussie? About IP addresses? Why are you so interested in them? It means absolutely nothing, really. If you want to stalk people you would be better off trying Facebook or whatever.Aussie wrote: Why don't you ask me, Neferti?

You, too, are talking crap, Annie. NOBODY can find me (personally) via my IP address on a Forum. Get Real!annielaurie wrote:Well I've wondered about that too. I don't consider "people" on Forums firm friends like you apparently do. I have my own firm friends and most are not interested in Politics so that is why I need to vent.

I meant that nobody can actually locate or find someone by an IP number alone, whether he or she is using their own ISP or a proxy server.
You are right, nobody can find you (personally) by your IP address on a forum.
