Those are asylum seekers reaching Australia, predominantly these are “boat people” and that chart shows the complete failure of the Pacific Solution. It also shows push factors are overwhelmingly the reason for fluctuations in the numbers. This does not include family reunion or humanitarian intake, it is boat people.

Monk the chart is irrelevant when you consider how many refugees arrive here compared to our small population. If it was judged per capita our intake is larger than even the USA. We have now increased the numbers to 20,000 and shortly it will increase to 27,000. Add their families and the dozen or so children they produce and these numbers are unsustainable.

Do other countries spend as much as us in trying to make them comfortable? Forty years ago they were housed in basic cabins, cooked for themselves and were given a time limit to find work. Now we're just bringing in thousands of sick people who can contribute very little or nothing and will have to be nursed for the rest of their lives. Look at the numbers claiming compensation and there will be hundreds, maybe thousands more who will do the same.
