The Pacific Solution is costing us now in compensation - millions - so hopefully the govt. will close the loopholes for detainees seeking compensation once they're released. Apart from that - it seems like the more economical solution in the long term. The refugees are also given freedom in Nauru to walk around and help in the Island activities. I could think of worse places to be.

Rubbish. Most people I know who voted for Howard weren't hoodwinked at all. Whilst they were unhappy about increases in immigration, they were happy the boat smuggling stopped.
The Pacific Solution is costing us now in compensation - millions
Rubbish. The Pacific Solution stopped the boats, processing on Nauru was done under the auspices of the UN. You wanna make claims, be more specific and accurate.

You're not related to xxxxx are you?

Are you denying that compensation is being paid to many dozens of refugees who were detained under Howard's Pacific Solution? If you haven't kept up - don't expect me to do it for you.

I've looked I can't find anything backing your original statement.

JM, I don't always agree with IQS, but here he's 100% right and you just spout nonsense.
Do you remember Cornelia Rau and Vivien Solenge? That was only the beginning.
By late last year, the federal government had paid $18 million in compensation to asylum seekers for unlawful detention and $5 million for negligence to former detainees.

The Pacific Solution did NOT work:

Also read: http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/ ... 567010.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It didn’t work but it won Howard the 2001 election. Gullible as!
