Re: Govt. allows massive fishing trawler to take what they w
Well if Australia just goes for selling off it's natural resources like, land, ore and fisheries to sustain the great life, at some point it will all come crashing down.
Maybe not today but it will someday.
In England they have little natural resources, little ore, limited land and the sea is already over fished and they need it all plus important most to meet the demand of over 60M people in the area of the state of victoria (or less).
They have to add value to the things they produce. Now, that not much as it is a services based ecconomy, big banking sector and a land of shop keepers and consumers.
They have to adapt to survive. It is time Australia did the same. I read Australia isa serviced based ecconomy... well I don;'t believe it. It's a dig it up, grow it, catch it and sell it to other countries where the real value add is.
Start adding true value to the raw material of the country... then Australia will truely be the envy of the world.

We used to have it all, but there have been huge changes over the last 30 or so years especially since we've become so involved in the UN/World Bank/IMF who control every move of those countries who are members. They have to adapt to survive. There is no protectionism in Australia. We bail out foreign companies before we help our own. We sell off our prime agricultural land to foreigners so they can feed their own people and the rest of our land is being consumed by gas and coal exploration.
Now our fish are next to go to put profits in the hands of other nations. The irony of this is that fishing is so severely restricted here for local fishing fleets and individuals - yet in one fell swoop a foreign entity can come in and clean us out.

You seem to forget that Fraser played a big part in removing tariffs, deregulating industry and encouraging boat people. The Howard government reinvigorated the live export industry and deregulated the dairy industry creating enormous damage to this sector. The Libs and Labor are both guilty of serving another boss - not the people of Australia.IQS.RLOW wrote:All because of the Greens and Labor
Most of our manufacturing industries headed overseas under the Howard era. The Howard government also allowed nations to purchase our agriculture land - it was Labor and the Greens who changed the legislation enabling foreigners to continue to buy land here, but their nations couldn't - not that it makes much difference, but it has at least reined in China and India a little bit.

So the Environment Minister Tony Burke is saying that he COULD use his powers to stop the trawler if an environmental impact statement says that it will have a MAJOR effect and kill too many dolphins, albatross and sea lions. Why didn't they get this statement earlier and it's obvious it will have a major effect as it does everywhere it travels. From what I've read so far - it's a done deal and Burke is just making noises to placate the dissenters.
The Tasmanian and WA Greens are trying to get it stopped before it enters Australian waters and Tasmanian Labor and the Liberals are supporting them. In fact I think most people would agree that they don't want this gigantic trawler anywhere near Australia.
So the decision to allow this devastation rests squarely on Burke's shoulders. His affirmative response will hurt Labor politically more than anything else.

FEDERAL Environment Minister Tony Burke has warned he could use his powers to ban a controversial super-trawler if it poses a big enough risk to dolphins and other marine life.
Responsibility for the FV Margiris rests with Fisheries Minister Joe Ludwig but Mr Burke says he could override a decision if scientific advice points to a major environmental impact.
Mr Burke is concerned about the 142-metre factory ship's by-catch, particularly dolphins, sea lions and sea birds such as albatrosses.
"As with anything that hits what are called matters of national environmental significance ... there are powers of intervention that rest with the environment minister," he told ABC radio.
Mr Burke said after meeting the ship's operators, Seafish Tasmania, on Tuesday he was still "some distance" from having enough information to make a call on whether his powers under the Environment Act would come into play.

Burke is back-tracking getting prepared for another humungous/humongous government back-flip.

I think fish are slimy looking and I would never, ever have "pet" fish (or birds in cages) But I will eat them. Fish fillets.Yummy. It is good for your cholesterol.

Let's hope he does do a backflip and doesn't permit it anywhere near Australia. The government needs to start listening to the people if they've got any hope of being returned. Gillard's backflip on sending asylum seekers to Nauru was welcomed, but on the other hand the increase to our refugee intake is now 20,000 - the largest in the world. It was Abbott's idea in the first place - although he too backflipped.Rorschach wrote:Burke is back-tracking getting prepared for another humungous/humongous government back-flip.
Even Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's offer to increase the intake to 20,000 - a reluctant olive branch to the Greens in return for supporting the Coalition's Nauru offshore processing policy - would exceed the surplus by almost $500 million. The offer has been withdrawn.
