Tony Abbott - promises

Post by mantra » Mon Aug 20, 2012 8:23 am

Abbott claims that he'll restore the good times we experienced under the Howard government. It's impossible. For us to have another boom - the rest of the world has to be in a similar position too. The prolific money lending and hedge fund investing left many countries and big business in a precarious position. Millions of ordinary people got hurt too. Howard encouraged people to spend more than they could afford and then walked away just as the GFC hit us.

Howard's cabinet was burnt out towards the end of his rule and the passing of years won't rescind that. Abbott also wants Howard as our next GG to mentor him. I can't think of anyone worse than a neo-conservative ex prime-minister being appointed to a position of such power - especially a megalomaniac. Abbott might very well lose the next election if he keeps on spruiking his fantasies.

Tony Abbott has promised to return Australia to the "golden age" of the Howard government under his "incoming Coalition government".

The tradition of the Howard government would live on, Mr Abbott declared, in no small part because of the similarities between his frontbench and Mr Howard's ministerial team.

"Sixteen members of my frontbench were ministers in the Howard government," Mr Abbott said.

"We won't have to learn on the job because we have done the job before. There won't be questions about the judgment of an incoming Coalition government because an incoming Coalition government has shown good judgment in the past and that's where there is going to be such a contrast between an incoming Coalition government and the government that we currently have."

The number of former Howard government ministers on the frontbench could increase after the next election if Mal Brough, who served as the minister for indigenous affairs, is successful in his bid to return to federal politics.

Mr Abbott, who once described himself as the political love child of Mr Howard and the Liberal MP Bronwyn Bishop, has previously been criticised for the number of long-serving MPs he has kept on his frontbench at the expense of up-and-comers.

Where to start?
Abbott claims that he'll restore the good times we experienced under the Howard government.
Nothing wrong with good time mantra.
It's impossible. For us to have another boom - the rest of the world has to be in a similar position too.

Ah... wrong. We are in a boom now.
The prolific money lending and hedge fund investing left many countries and big business in a precarious position.

But not us we have better behaved and regulated financial institutions. Oh and we didn't have Clinton as president.
Millions of ordinary people got hurt too. Howard encouraged people to spend more than they could afford and then walked away just as the GFC hit us.
Really? i must have missed that. BTW the GFC was really not that Global. In fact it hardly affected us (and the southern hemisphere) at all.
Howard's cabinet was burnt out towards the end of his rule and the passing of years won't rescind that.
Your point being? Even a burnt out Howard cabinet is going to be better than the current mob.
Abbott also wants Howard as our next GG to mentor him.

You sure about that? How does becoming GG help Howard mentor Abbott. he'd have more opportunity to do it now, from retirement.
I can't think of anyone worse than a neo-conservative ex prime-minister being appointed to a position of such power - especially a megalomaniac such as Howard. Abbott might very well lose the next election if he keeps on spruiking his fantasies.
Howard unlike Rudd was never a megalomaniac. that is pure nonsense.
So what are these fantasies he's been spruiking? I agree talk of Howard for GG will turn some people away. Mostly Green and ALP people. Howard was past his use by date and Workchoices showed poor judgement as did not letting Costello take over. But the Liberals lacked courage and conviction and let Howard stay on too long. Even though his time his past. He is our 2nd longest serving PM , so he must have been doing something right. I don't reject out of hand him becoming GG some day. But talk of it now is far too premature IMO.

Ah... wrong. We are in a boom now.
The financial commentators seem to believe that our exports are waning because China is stockpiling. Exports to Japan aren't so good either since the Tsunami. Others with an agenda will talk our economy up because the banks have invested so heavily in mining. If our economy is so fantastic - why are so many people struggling?

That's where it gets a bit tricky. How do you measure incompetence against bad policy?

Well there is talk of Howard becoming GG and Abbott is becoming obsessive and offensive with his hatred towards Gillard. It's a turnoff. He's no better than Gillard as far as we know - he could be worse if or when he gets some power.

Abbott will also reintroduce Workchoices. Every time there's a change of government - billions are spent in the changeover. Is it worth voting in another party whose leader is the puppet of an ageing ex-pm? Do we want to go through the same expensive teething problems of a new party so soon?

Well I'm no Abbott fan nor was I a Howard fan, but you have to be truthful in dealing with people and not just run with emotive claptrap.
The financial commentators seem to believe that our exports are waning because China is stockpiling. Exports to Japan aren't so good either since the Tsunami. Others with an agenda will talk our economy up because the banks have invested so heavily in mining. If our economy is so fantastic - why are so many people struggling?
No, that is not true. We have what is called a "patchwork" economy. The Mining Industry is doing fine and keeping us afloat regardless of China slowing down a little. Mind you the boom will end, they all end.

That's where it gets a bit tricky. How do you measure incompetence against bad policy?
Tricky? I'd have thought with this and Rudd's government it is/was quite apparent, how incompetent, they are/were. Not only do they create bad policy, they badly implement it. That's a fail/fail.
Well there is talk of Howard becoming GG and Abbott is becoming obsessive and offensive with his hatred towards Gillard. It's a turnoff. He's no better than Gillard as far as we know - he could be worse if or when he gets some power.
Really? He pulled the Libs bacon out of the fire and nearly won back government in one term where he was leader for a very small part of it. Thanks of course to a completely incompetent Government. true we don't know what he'd be like, as we didn't know about Howard, or Rudd, or Gillard. But I don't think he could be anywhere near as bad as the latter. He may in fact be a great deal better and not as ideologically drawn as Howard was.
Abbott will also reintroduce Workchoices.

No he won't. Even if he did, that would be political suicide. He understands that even if some in the Shadow Cabinet don't. The problem would be would the pain of another Labor government be greater than another Workchoices.
Every time there's a change of government - billions are spent in the changeover. Is it worth voting in another party whose leader is the puppet of an ageing ex-pm? Do we want to go through the same expensive teething problems of a new party so soon?
As for billions spent in changeover, perhaps you care to expand on that. Also I hardly think Abbott is a puppet for Howard, that is just Labor propaganda, which they seldom use these days. But hey, given they get desperate enough, who knows what they will say. I'd rather go through some teeth pulling than have Labor keep destroying my country and the society I grew up in thanks.

Do you really want Gillard to continue on her destructive path?

Destructive path?

Inflation, unemployment and interest rates low, a trifecta the Coalition never mastered. Three major ratings agencies rate the economy AAA, something blowhard Costello never managed.

Howard & Costello did encourage people to max out the credit card, pork barreled, spent and cut taxes for the rich into a boom, leading to 10 interest rate rises on the trot and 4% CPI December 2007.

The Nats were given $40Bn to spend and rorted and wasted the lot, and the lib fanbois here weep crocodile tears that Labor will spend $40Bn giving us a 21st century communication system. All this reckless spending to buy elections and give tax cuts resulted in a huge deficit once the GFC hit.

The Rudd/Gillard government have boosted hugely spending on roads and rail and other infrastructure, yet will show a surplus. Education disability services about to get a huge shakeup and increased spending. If this is a destructive path long may we follow it!

I'm prepared for you JM.
I took several large doses of Valium before reading your crap this time. :D
Inflation, unemployment and interest rates low, a trifecta the Coalition never mastered. Three major ratings agencies rate the economy AAA, something blowhard Costello never managed.
Oh wait, wait... I thought Interest rates were controlled by the RBA . Let's look at Labor governments before the Howard Costello government left us in such good economic condition. I mean if one wants to cherry-pick let's do it properly. Hawke/Keating, interest rates 18%+, inflation waaaay up, unemployment up. Ah JM where did the surplus Ruddy pissed against the wall come from? Hmmm? :rofl
Howard & Costello did encourage people to max out the credit card, pork barreled, spent and cut taxes for the rich into a boom, leading to 10 interest rate rises on the trot and 4% CPI December 2007.
Just stating something without proof, in your case, is just LW propaganda JM. Oh and BTW JM, in my opinion the RBA didn't have to keep increasing the interest rates and guess what Costello commented on it and guess what else after the Liberals lost the election the RBA corrected their actions by lowering interest rates and admitted they had made a mistake.
Yes the NBN is a waste, then so has been most of the labor Governments spending. Just what did the Nats spend their money on and where is the proof they were ever given $40Bn?
The Rudd/Gillard government have boosted hugely spending on roads and rail and other infrastructure, yet will show a surplus. Education disability services about to get a huge shakeup and increased spending. If this is a destructive path long may we follow it!

You mean the Qld spending? The rest of the National road spending was planned and allocated by the previous government. The only new rail infrastructure of a national nature was Howard's spending on the line up the middle of Australia. Education/disability services were cut in NSW by the last Labor government just before being booted.

You want a destructive path...
How about $100Mn a day in interest alone.
But wait there's more...
Labor's list of failures.
Fuel Watch
Grocery Watch
Pink Batts
BER
Skills program
Set Top Boxes
Laptops
Green Rebates
Solar Panels
Aboriginal Home Funding
Boat people
Defence Spending
Health Funding
Pokies
etc, etc, etc...

Not particularly - but there seem to be some minor improvements lately in Labor policy.

More concerning is Abbott's underlying threat in his innuendo that private schools are being treated unfairly. Where will this lead - to the bad old days under the extreme capitalist Howard? This is only the start. Abbott needs to come clean in regard to his agenda. Who wants to go back to the old Coalition days? The majority? His popularity still remains equal to Gillards so she can't be written off yet.

It was also Abbott's suggestion to increase the refugee intake. There has always been a goal by the coalition to increase our population to 50 million.

Abbott has clearly shown he is not Howard. Have you read "Battlelines"? Stop with the conspiracy crap and Labor propaganda unless you can back it up with some facts. Your political bias is showing.

Remember Kevin's Big Australia. Both major parties want a larger population. Stop being biased.
