Was reading that Mars once had rain and rivers and the planet could be used to study climate change. Another source said that Mars' climate changed because it was hit by a huge meteor and so it isn't relevant. Hadn't heard that theory before ....

As far as I know, Mars has two problems for human life:

(1) Too far from the sun, and therefore cold

(2) Too small, and therefore loses atmosphere due to low gravity

However, both of those problems can be overcome with technology. Basically, if we can actually manage to get people to Mars, we'll have enough advanced technology to keep them alive there, and eventually to make the colony self-sustaining. With enough energy, we can do almost anything - and solar energy would probably be enough.

In the long term, though, the future of the stars belongs to our machine descendants, if we ever get that far. Humans are a life-form suited to living on the surface of one particular planet, which is the one we're on right now. If our life is to expand through the galaxy, it will have to be in a different form more suited to that task.

With cybernetic enhancements we could live pretty much anywhere. I'm surprised that it hasn't been developed more widely so far, outside of corrective surgery.

It's coming along, but there are non-trivial technological problems that need to be solved along the way. It turns out that controlling natural body movements is more difficult than we thought it would be fifty years ago, but we're getting there now.

I think this is the future.

Cybernetics plus Genetic modifications with brain access to computer systems will produce a lifeform that will go into the universe.

It will happen.

A greater advance will be for a fully constructed machine were nano tech emulates life and it is built from first principles. No organic material from earth life. Now that will be a real achievement then it would not be bound by the restructions of life as we know it. Food, air, temperature....etc. It will need an energy system and a self repair and replicate function.

It will be even beyond the borg.

It will definitely happen.

The only question is if it will be our species that makes it happen, or if we fail and some other species does it instead.
