Santa was a forest hobo in Finland.
He would eat the same magic mushrooms the reindeer did and get high on his magic sleigh
Reindeer in Finland, when consuming the mushies, would bump into trees and hence the pun on the Red Nose reindeer
Personally, I think this one is most likely a true basis for the Finland Santa at least.

Three Santas in Yakutia.
The one in center Chyyskhan, which in Yakut means "cold, sharp, piercing wind", was there long before Christianity.
