Autographs

Post by Aussie » Sat Apr 02, 2011 9:12 pm

I just found my maternal Grandmother's Autograph Book. On one page, there is this:

"Slander dies a natural death at a poor woman's door."

It is dated 18.11.15

So it is saying that only rich folk engage in behaviour that could be deemed slanderous/slanderable?

Yes, how to interpret that is full of options.

My Elder Brother (we are sorting out some Family records/stuff) agrees with your interpretatation, Darko....sort of.

His view was that a poor woman could say what they liked, and get away with it......no point suing a beggar, so to speak.

Or that only rich folk are worth suing for slander?

That's actually different to what I meant.

Your brother is saying that both rich and poor indulge in slanderable behaviour, but only the rich are deemed worthy of slandering.

My interpretation is that the rich are idle selfish buggers, and behave differently to poor women.

Could mean that a poor woman (of the age) had no reputation that slander could harm.

It is a ripper of a comment to make in 1915. Google was not my friend, and I am sure you all did the 'google.''

Anyone else?

I dunno. They weren't idiots back then.

"There is such a thing as a man being too proud to fight; there is such a thing as a nation being so right that it does not need to convince others by force that it is right."
Woodrow Wilson, Speech in Philadelphia, May 10, 1915

Pity we havn't found that nation yet though :|
