I have one cat who claws the rugs I have only two I even went out and bought a new one for the lounge room. and when backs turned she having a whale of a time...... never see her claw at anything outside....now the other one has started although at least she does claw at the sleepers bordering the garden beds....so the mats are getting shredded but no way am I replacing them......as for sleeping red I sleep with two one at the top of the bed and one at the bottom so fun!

I'll never let one in my house again. The last one ruined 2 leather sofas by scratching and pissing on them.

I dont think it makes much difference, if they want to have a scratch the nearest lounge etc will do, from my observations.
